SCHAUMBURG, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 25, 2000

Motorola Inc. (NYSE:MOT) today announced that Kent Kart Ltd. has received a Sesame award for the best transit application of the year for a smart card automated fare collection (AFC) system based on technology from Motorola Worldwide Smartcard Solutions (WSSD).

The prestigious award, presented at an evening reception during the Cartes 2000 trade show in Paris, recognizes innovation and leadership in smart card technology and applications worldwide.

"The Sesame transportation award recognizes Kent Kart Ltd. systems management as one that stands above," said Mr. Jim Osborne, corporate vice president and general manager for Motorola WSSD, speaking from the Cartes 2000 awards ceremony in Paris. "We offer our sincere congratulations to the team at Kent Kart on winning the Sesame award - it is a world-class achievement."

"Motorola committed itself to the success of the Kent Kart project in Izmir, and our Best Application award in the transportation sector is a testimonial to their active and successful involvement. As the systems integrator, Motorola remains committed today as we continue to advance and add capabilities to this industry-leading system," said Dr. Mazhar Basmaci, managing director of Kent Kart Ltd. "We are grateful for the recognition given to our achievement by the international smart card community through this award."

Motorola provided dual interface M-Smart Venus(TM) MV4000 smart cards, system software and software development services for the AFC system implemented in the city of Izmir, Turkey by Kent Kart Ege Elektronik Sanayi ve Ticaret Limited Sirketi - a Basmaci Group Company. Kent Kart is a systems integrator and Motorola distributor. The system is also operated and maintained by Kent Kart Ltd., a name that means "city card."

Millions of times each day Motorola's advanced systems technology makes fare payment faster and easier for users of public transportation in Izmir, Turkey and around the world. The nominated application, which went live in April 1999, is believed to have been the first fully operational smart card-based transit system in Europe. The Izmir implementation is at the forefront of transportation AFC systems in several ways, including its use of contactless smart card technology and its support for different modes of transportation on a single fare card, known in the industry as intermodal capability. Over time, the AFC system is intended to replace the current practice of manual collection and counting of paper tickets.

The Sesames are recognized as the world's leading awards for innovation and leadership in smart card technology and applications. A panel of specialized international journalists and experts judge the awards.
