NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 11, 2000
PayForView.com, an entertainment destination site for exciting live events, sports, comedy, concerts and more, has been granted two international internet clearance licenses to netcast any major record label release through www.payforview.com.
The nations two largest performing rights organizations, The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) and Broadcast Music Incorporated (BMI), collectively agreed to permit PayForView.com to stream audio and visual musical programming, including live and pre-recorded concerts and music videos, on www.payforview.com through performance licenses. These licenses now provide PayForView with the legal right to netcast audio and video of (potentially) millions of songs created or owned by America's finest composers, songwriters, lyricists, publishers, as well as thousands of writers and publishers from all over the world.
PayForView.com is in good company. In fact, every AM and FM radio station, UHF, VHF, cable and television network must carry either or both ASCAP and BMI licenses in order to air copyrighted music. Since the internet is also a public forum, new media programmers and content producers must also abide by these federal rules and regulations. "It's important to understand that ASCAP and BMI are not record companies, music publishers, concert promoters, booking agencies or management companies," noted Dan Scott, Chief Marketing Officer for PayForView.com. "ASCAP and BMI are the largest music license organizations which control performance rights and represent songwriters, composers and music publishers worldwide. PayForView.com is proud to be associated with both of these highly respected businesses."
Both ASCAP and BMI work on a percentage. These organizations collect money from any firm that uses their music and then pays out that money as royalties to the composers and publishers of the songs and compositions released to the public in any manner. Fees vary widely among the different kinds of customers. For example, a local radio station will pay a lower fee than a national television network; a neighborhood tavern pays a lot less than a Las Vegas hotel.
Marc Pitcher, PayForView.com's President stated, "Since we are looking to add music content to our programming, we needed to take care of our legal obligation under United States copyright law before netcasting copyrighted music. Through ASCAP and BMI, we now have their permission to do so."
Until now, PayForView.com has exclusively licensed songs through DeWolfe music library, a producer and distributor of production music. While the company will keep its relationship with DeWolfe, they now have the opportunity to netcast any song heard on your favorite radio station as well.

ABOUT ASCAP
ASCAP's function is to protect the rights of its members by licensing and paying royalties for the public performances of their copyrighted works. ASCAP is the only American performing rights organization whose Board of Directors consists solely of member composers, songwriters and music publishers elected by the membership. The 24-member Board meets regularly to set policy and actively guide all aspects of the society's business. In addition, there are 18 Board committees, which provide oversight and direction to management in various areas of ASCAP's operation.
ASCAP's licensees include the major television networks, local television, cable television, direct satellite broadcasts, radio stations, public broadcasters, colleges and universities, taverns and restaurants, background music services, web sites, private clubs, hotels, conventions and trade shows, concert halls and concert presenters, dance halls, shopping centers and malls, theme and amusement parks, airlines, etc. There are over one hundred different ASCAP rate schedules covering almost all businesses that perform music.
ABOUT BMI
BMI was founded 60 years ago on the idea that all songwriters, composers and publishers have the right to be paid for the use of their intellectual property no matter how that property is used. BMI continues to watch the development of all technologies that use music so the creators will be fairly paid for all their hard work. The BMI catalogue consists of more than 4.5 million recognizable compositions from artists and composers worldwide.
