LONDON--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--Sept. 12, 2000
Macrovision UK Ltd., a subsidiary of Macrovision Corporation (NASDAQ:MVSN) in Sunnyvale, Calif., announced today that TechniSat Digital GmbH, Germany's leading satellite receiving equipment manufacturer is now licensed to include Macrovision's digital pay-per-view (PPV) copy protection technology in its digital set-top boxes.
"We are delighted to welcome TechniSat to our growing list of Macrovision-licensed digital receiver manufacturers. TechniSat is now able to offer Macrovision's copy protection technology to pay-per-view operators around the world," said David Simmons, managing director, Macrovision UK Ltd. "More and more system operators are realizing the value of copy protection in their PPV business model. This, coupled with rights holders' desires to protect their intellectual property from unauthorized copying, means that set top box manufacturers offering copy protection have a competitive advantage in the market."
Macrovision PPV copy protection technology allows consumers to view, but not record, programs that are copy-protected at the direction of pay TV operators or program suppliers. The technology is designed to deter unauthorized home taping of digitally delivered programs. This allows copyright owners to minimize cannibalization of their home video revenues while maximizing PPV system operator revenues. Over 40 million Macrovision-enabled digital set top boxes have been shipped since 1995, comprising approximately 90% of all digital set top boxes shipped worldwide. Since 1996, over 45 million PPV and VOD buys have been copy protected, helping drive new and repeat buys.
"This important agreement will allow us to meet the increasing demand for copy protection from pay-TV operators," said Friedhelm Flamm, managing director of TechniSat Digital GmbH. "Copy protection will encourage more recent movie releases on pay-per-view services and this is what consumers want."
