CALABASIS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--September 22, 2000

Spirent Communications, the world leader in performance analysis solutions, today announced ScriptCenter(tm) support for both its Adtech AX/4000 Broadband Test System and SmartBits(R) System. ScriptCenter's interpretive scripting environment enables telecommunications engineers to easily and quickly create custom and automated testing applications through a common interface for its Adtech and SmartBits product lines.

"ScriptCenter gives test engineers the ability, from a single environment, to easily create test solutions that integrate various Spirent performance analysis solutions," said Alan Sguigna, vice president of marketing for Spirent Communications Adtech Systems. "With a consistent user interface, customers can create a totally self-contained development and testing environment that will help them speed their products to market and generate revenues quicker."

ScriptCenter eliminates the need to have dedicated software engineers perform the tedious and time-consuming task of creating custom test applications and empowers test engineers to work in a scripting environment as opposed to a true programming language. It provides an easy alternative to the often-complicated task of writing and generating scripts. ScriptCenter's user-friendly interface supports beginning programmers and walks them through the scripting procedures, while experienced users benefit from the ability to create automated procedures and advanced or customized tests using Tcl (Tool Command Language).

Tcl is the preferred scripting environment for most lab, manufacturing and operational entities, with more than half a million developers using this scripting environment worldwide.

Tcl uses a simple, programmable syntax that can reduce the amount of code test engineers have to write by up to 90 percent. It requires no compiler and Tcl/Tk (Toolkit) can be run one line at a time for rapid development and trouble-shooting of applications -- users focus on testing rather than application programming.

"As the speed and complexity of telecommunications products and services increases so must the sophistication and efficiency of the test solutions," said Mark Fishburn, Spirent Communications vice president of marketing, SmartBits Systems. "Engineering time and energy are better spent developing revenue generating products and services."

The modularity of the ScriptCenter architecture allows for easy updates via the World Wide Web. Users can download new scripts, execute the files, and they will place themselves in the appropriate locations on the ScriptCenter directories. ScriptCenter is also accompanied by an HTML help file, which provides details on the application's functionality.
