Notes of Interest:
Ian Thorpe (a.k.a. "The Torpedo") comes in at number 34 this week, higher than any other athlete online, except tennis beauty Anna Kournikova (#26). Thorpe's popularity online has been on the rise for weeks based on his good looks and his reputation as Australia's savior in the swimming pool. At number 36, Svetlana Khorkina's popularity is due partly to her diva attitude. The Russian gymnast was favored to win multiple golds for Russia, but she became infamous last week when she was the victim of a blunder by Olympic officials who set the vault five centimeters below regulation height. She rebounded to win gold on the uneven parallel bars.
Other Olympic Notes of Interest:
Also popular with Web users were male gymnasts Alexei Nemov (Russia) and Blaine Wilson (USA) and American swimmer Jenny Thompson. Fans can access the Olympic chats at http://www.olympics.com or from http://olympics.lycos.com. Fans are encouraged to check out the Special Events Chat Calendar on Lycos for daily updates on all chat schedules with Olympic athletes from Sydney.
Biggest Rise:
Now that school is back in session, Science Fair Projects (#16) and marijuana (#18) both jumped 12 spots on this week's list.
Campaign 2000 Presidential Watch:
On The Lycos 50 weekly comparison watch of Campaign 2000 searches, Al Gore queries are leading George Bush queries by 55 percent to 45 percent.
