JACKSONVILLE, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 5, 2000
Autoliv North America has selected GATX Logistics, Inc. for dedicated contract carriage services that will support its manufacturing plant in Ogden, Utah. GATX Contract Carriers, a subsidiary of GATX Logistics, will manage the collection of parts and components from 39 Autoliv suppliers in 10 states east of the Mississippi River.
Autoliv North America is a division of Autoliv Inc. Autoliv Inc. develops and manufactures automotive safety systems for major automakers throughout the world. The company has 60 wholly-owned subsidiaries and joint ventures in 29 vehicle-producing countries. Their product line includes seat belts, front- and side-impact airbags, steering wheels, child restraints and anti-whiplash seats.
"Initially, we'll be running 66 scheduled collection routes from our Central Region hub in Bloomington/Normal, Illinois," said Gene Marino, vice president of national accounts, GATX Logistics. "Materials arriving at the hub will be checked against Autoliv's production schedule and cross-docked onto line-haul trailers for just-in-time (JIT) delivery to their Ogden airbag plant."
"Information technology was critical in winning this account. Our specialized transportation management system gives Autoliv optimal visibility and control of materials in the pipeline. This helps them achieve more discipline with their supplier base, which in turn, streamlines the production process and dramatically cuts the amount of inventory they must carry in the plant," said Marino.
In addition to managing the flow of inbound components, GATX Logistics will also manage the transportation of some finished products back through the pipeline to assure maximum utilization of the line-haul equipment provided by GATX Contract Carriers. GATX Logistics' systems will transmit an advance shipping notice (ASN) to Autoliv's automakers when products ship from Ogden to the Bloomington/Normal hub.
