HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 16, 2001
Schlumberger Network Solutions today announced the development of an innovative new technology to improve the security and manageability of Web-based transactions. This secure Web access solution, Schlumberger Smart Port(a) services, now commercially available, is currently securing global business-to-business applications.
In the past, Web transactions were "secured" by easily cracked passwords that failed to provide non-repudiation. Smart Port provides authentication, privacy and authorization for online transactions, permitting businesses to safely conduct virtual transactions while leveraging substantial investments in Internet software and hardware.
In addition to security features, Smart Port provides authorization and user management features. It also provides users with flexibility in how they utilize Web resources. Smart Port is currently offered as a fully managed solution, with back-end hardware securely locked in a room accessible only to authorized personnel who must first use a smart card reader and then pass through a biometric scanner for access. Schlumberger Network Solutions also offers global, 24x7 help desk support, complete consulting and system integration.
"Approximately 10 percent of online transactions are fraudulent," says Gary Yamamoto, vice president of Infosec, a division of Schlumberger Network Solutions. "Smart Port overcomes this barrier by providing a highly secure and fully managed environment. Schlumberger Smart Port services will truly open new markets and channels for large-scale commerce."
Virtually any Web site can be transformed into a highly secure portal by using Schlumberger Smart Port services. This enables businesses to conduct high-value transactions online in real-time. Smart Port combines two-factor authentication technologies, such as smart cards and policy servers, for authorization. Schlumberger Network Solutions will issue digital certificates to Schlumberger Smart Port services customers. Customers and Web sites will be mutually authenticated and all transactions will be encrypted from end-to-end, providing an environment where only authorized and highly secure business transactions can occur.
