Partnership delivers news, weather and financial data to
IBM WebSphere Portal Server users worldwide
Leading IBM business partners en technologies corporation, a global portal solutions integrator, and ScreamingMedia (Nasdaq: SCRM), a leading global provider of content solutions, today announced the companies will partner to develop and promote three essential portlets for IBM WebSphere Portal Server.
en technologies, one of IBM's earliest partners in the WebSphere portal space, will build three portlets, or portal applications, that will interact with ScreamingMedia's SiteWare(TM) software, a publishing and integration software application, to deliver real-time news, weather and financial information directly through IBM's WebSphere Portal Server. These portlets will enable IBM customers to create customized portal solutions with personalized access to up-to-the-minute content, thereby giving businesses yet another compelling reason to deploy portals as the common desktop environment. Today's announcement extends the existing relationships ScreamingMedia and en technologies maintain with IBM to give customers quick and seamless access to meaningful content via IBM portal solutions.
Portal technology derives its functionality from applets, commonly referred to as portlets, which perform one of three functions: they provide access to a content source such as ScreamingMedia; they surface an application such as Lotus SameTime or QuickPlace; or they provide specific application functionality. A robust, accessible library of portlets is required for success in the portal space. In conjunction with its business partners, IBM will release hundreds of portlets for use with WebSphere Portal Server.
"Our customers made it very clear early in the development cycle that portlets and content were critical to deploying a successful enterprise-wide portal architecture," said en technologies Chief Operating Officer and Senior Architect, Terence J. Goodwin. "The powerful combination of en technologies' expertise in eBusiness solutions and ScreamingMedia's unsurpassed content network advances IBM's position as the industry's leading portal architecture for enterprise deployment."
ScreamingMedia and IBM entered into an agreement in March to bundle ScreamingMedia's SiteWare(TM) software into IBM's WebSphere Portal Server thus allowing WebSphere customers seamless access to ScreamingMedia's global content network. Under that agreement, ScreamingMedia created initial customized content portlets for WebSphere customers. Now, by outsourcing the additional portlet development work to en technologies, ScreamingMedia will be able to focus on its core competencies of creating customized content solutions for IBM customers while guaranteeing a quicker time to market and seamless integration into customers' portal environments.
"Our partnership with en technologies will help us to significantly enhance our offering to IBM's WebSphere customers," said Kevin Clark, Chairman and CEO of ScreamingMedia. "With these enhanced portlets we will be able to integrate more content and thus provide a more complete portal environment for our joint customers."
