SANTA CRUZ, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 20, 2001

Caldera International, Inc. (Nasdaq:CALD) today announced that Shoppers Drug Mart is planning to implement Caldera's UnixWare 7 with Linux Kernel Personality (LKP) technology running the SilverStream Application Server, Linux release.

This combination of a Linux solution on a UNIX platform will be implemented, beginning in the second quarter of 2002, in over 800 stores by Shoppers Drug Mart, Canada's largest and fastest growing network of retail pharmacies.

Shoppers Drug Mart wanted to maintain its existing UnixWare infrastructure but needed additional technology for its corporate applications. Caldera's LKP technology and the SilverStream Application Server for Linux allowed it to complete both requirements.

The UNIX platform purchased, UnixWare 7, is a precursor to Caldera's recently announced Open UNIX 8 product. Open UNIX 8 incorporates the LKP technology into the UnixWare 7 kernel, allowing Linux applications to be deployed on top of the powerful and highly scalable UNIX kernel. Shoppers Drug Mart will later upgrade to Open UNIX 8 after having certified the SilverStream technology via the Linux application layer.

The SilverStream Application Server enables the development and deployment of a wide range of store-based applications under UnixWare 7. SilverStream will also be a core component in Shoppers Drug Mart's corporate environment.

"This installation supports Caldera's position as a leader in providing real solutions for real business needs," said Biff Traber, senior vice president, Platform Business Line, Caldera. "Combining the best of two worlds-- the heritage of UNIX and the momentum of Linux-- provides a tremendous benefit to organizations such as Shoppers Drug Mart that need the stability, scalability and customization to run a network that literally spans a nation. With our release of Open UNIX 8 this summer, Caldera is making that integration of technologies even easier to implement. "

"With Caldera's support, we are delivering a front-of-the-line solution to Shoppers Drug Mart via the SilverStream Application Server for Linux on Caldera UNIX," said Bill Critch, director of alliances, SilverStream Software, Inc. "We look forward to working together with Caldera to deliver Linux-based products for the development and deployment of J2EE, XML and Web services-based applications on Caldera's Linux deployment platform for business critical systems."
