gmax game customization tools to be made available as a free

ushering in new era of game customization -- "It's Your Game"

Today from QuakeCon(TM), the world's premier multi-player gaming event, Discreet, a division of Autodesk Inc. (Nasdaq:ADSK), announced details for gmax(TM), the company's licensable game development platform and free consumer game-content editor.

The consumer version of gmax will be available as a free download to gamers in fall 2001 and will come packed with powerful 3D modeling, animation, texturing and character building tools. At QuakeCon this week, Discreet is offering hands-on demos and training for gmax, based on 3ds max(TM), Discreet's award-winning 3D modeling, animation and rendering software.

Discreet also announced that elements of gmax will be bundled with Microsoft(R) Flight Simulator 2002: Professional Edition, shipping in Q3 this year.

Discreet is also showing its own prototype game pack called Discreet gmax(TM) tempest game pack, which allows game players to create custom content for the popular game Quake III Arena(TM) developed by id Software(TM). Developed internally at Discreet, gmax tempest demonstrates the flexibility of the gmax architecture. Discreet will release gmax tempest game pack as a free download to complement the release of gmax in fall 2001. Discreet's gmax tempest game pack will also be provided to gmax development licensees in "source-code" format -- offering a real-world example of how to implement gmax game packs into any game production pipeline.

"Discreet is excited by the overwhelming interest game players and game developers have expressed for gmax," said Paul Perreault, gmax product manager. "The upcoming release of the gmax game pack -- gmax tempest -- is our way of `giving back' to a rich, exciting and creative community of game players like those attending QuakeCon."

"The mod community has been itching to get their hands on gmax since it was first unveiled at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in March 2001. QuakeCon is the perfect place for a hands-on presentation of gmax and the gmax tempest game pack technology, as it's one of the largest gatherings of individuals and teams from the mod community," said Paul Jaquays, designer, id Software. "Discreet's support of QuakeCon really shows their commitment to this incredibly talented community."
