CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 3, 2001
Contingency Plan to be implemented for Moving Broadband Internet
Customers to AT&T-Operated Network
AT&T Broadband Greater Chicago Market is slated to migrate its high-speed data customers to the new AT&T-operated network beginning Tuesday, December 4, 2001. The migration will continue until all customers have access to the new network. This follows on the heels of the successful migration of about 330,000 cable Internet customers to AT&T's new high speed Internet network as of Monday morning, Dec. 3, less than 48 hours after the At Home Corporation shut off service for more than 850,000 AT&T customers. The At Home Corporation's action followed a decision in U. S. Bankruptcy Court to cancel cable company distribution agreements with At Home.

The customers moved to the new AT&T network, so far, reside in Oregon, Washington, and Texas. "We feel extremely confidant because of AT&T's success in other markets, that we will be able to migrate customers very quickly and very efficiently to the new network," said Patricia Andrews-Keenan, vice president of communications. "We have all the people and processes in place to begin moving our customers tomorrow.
Customers will receive a broadcast phone call (phone message if they have an answering machine) advising them that the service is being migrated. The phone message will instruct them to initiate the log-on to the new network.
AT&T Broadband has communicated with all of its high-speed cable Internet customers during the past few weeks to help them prepare for these developments.
The company will automatically issue credits to any customers who experience an interruption of service. Credits will be issued at the rate of two days credit for every day of service interruption.
All affected customers will see these changes as part of their new service:
- Email domain names will automatically change from (username)@home.com to (username)@attbi.com. User names will stay the same; - AT&T Broadband Internet will feature AT&T WorldNet High Speed service content; - Upstream and downstream speeds will be managed to provide a more consistent broadband service and optimize the Internet experience for all of our customers.
AT&T Broadband cable and local telephone service aren't being affected by these developments.
"We are very pleased that we will be able to migrate our customers in this accelerated time frame moving them to a reliable, high-quality network that will serve them well," concluded Andrews-Keenan.
