AFSA Announces California Federation, Officers and Goals

Business Wire, Dec 6, 2001

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 6, 2001

The American Federation of School Administrators (AFSA), AFL-CIO, a national labor organization representing public school principals, administrators and supervisors announced today that its new California federation has elected officers and defined its goals to strengthen public education and the voice of educators in the Bay area.

The California Federation of School Administrators and Supervisors (CFSA), based in San Francisco, California, is comprised of three AFSA Local unions joining together to combine its legislative clout: the United Administrators of San Francisco, AFSA Local 3; the Union of Berkeley Administrators, AFSA Local 81; and the United Administrators of Oakland Schools, AFSA Local 83.

The new federation represents a total of nearly 600 Bay area public school principals, assistant principals, central office administrators and supervisors.

CFSA members elected the following officers:

-- President: James Dierke, who is also President of the United Administrators
of San Francisco, an AFSA General Executive Board (GEB) member, and Principal
of Visitacion Valley Middle School, SFUSD.

-- Vice President: Wendy Caporicci, President of the United Administrators of
Oakland Schools and a member of AFSA's GEB.

-- Treasurer: John Santoro, President of the Union of Berkeley Administrators.

-- Secretary: Vincent Chou, board member of the United Administrators of San
Francisco, and Principal of Visitacion Valley Elementary School.

CFSA's agenda will initially focus on the needs of California public school administrators to meet education challenges and improving working conditions. CFSA was created under a special provision in AFSA's Constitution that allows affiliates to petition its General Executive Board to form state federations to give members a greater voice on the job.

The federations are effective in increasing members' clout in the local, state and federal legislative arenas, enhancing member services, and organizing new members. CFSA is one of several newly formed federations under AFSA's umbrella.

"AFSA is pleased to welcome CFSA to its growing list of federations and we support their aggressive agenda to enhance the quality of public school education," stated AFSA President Dr. Joe L. Greene. "CFSA has its national union, AFSA behind them 100 percent."

"The bar on public education is being raised and public school leaders need resources, authority and funding to meet these challenges. CFSA was created to fight for these tools so every child will receive an equal opportunity to obtain the best possible public school education," said CFSA President James Dierke.

AFSA is a strong advocate for quality public school education. This year, AFSA celebrates its 25th anniversary providing labor, professional and leadership services to nearly 20,000 school principals, assistant principals, administrators and supervisors throughout the United States and U.S. Virgin Islands.
