CANNES, France--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 13, 2001

OpenTV (Nasdaq:OPTV)(AEX:OPTV):

-- The 13.9 million cumulative STBs deployed as of Dec. 31, 2000, is a 124
percent increase from the 6.2 million cumulative STB deployed as of Dec. 31,
1999

-- Growth in OpenTV's fourth quarter deployment number was primarily driven by
shipments in the U.S. of OpenTV-powered STBs by the DISH Network(TM) (EchoStar)
and in Europe by BSkyB in Great Britain, DIGITURK in Turkey and VIASAT in
Scandinavia.

OpenTV (Nasdaq: OPTV)(AEX:OPTV), the world's leading interactive television and media solutions company, today announced that its OpenTV middleware is now installed in more than 13.9 million digital set-top boxes (STBs) worldwide. Growth of deployments is across digital cable, digital satellite and digital terrestrial STBs.

Deployments in the fourth quarter ended Dec. 31, 2000, exceeded 2.8 million units, a record level for the company, and a 65 percent increase from the more than 1.7 million STBs shipped in the fourth quarter of 1999.

The record level of deployments in the fourth quarter 2000 demonstrates further traction of OpenTV in the U.S. market and underscores its worldwide leadership in the interactive television (ITV) industry as the company that continues to offer the industry a complete solution for delivering interactive television.

"We are extremely pleased to announce the strong growth in deployments of OpenTV enabled set-top boxes. We believe it represents acceptance and acknowledgement worldwide by network operators that OpenTV delivers the best technology for current and future generation set-top boxes," said James Ackerman, president, OpenTV. "It also represents the strong foundation upon which we will grow out our business to deliver interactive TV solutions for our customers."

With this announcement, OpenTV's management re-affirms its financial guidance as outlined in its fourth quarter 2000 financial results conference call held on Jan. 25, 2001.
