CANNES, France--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 20, 2001
Infineon Technologies (FSE/NYSE:IFX) today announced a highly integrated system development platform, including the necessary chipset and system software (firmware), for GSM/GPRS products with Bluetooth connectivity. Together with its subsidiaries Danish Wireless Design (DWD) and Comneon, Infineon offers the System Platform 2001, a complete design platform for dual band and triple band GSM cell phones with GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) and Bluetooth functionality. The System Platform 2001 provides manufacturers of cell phones with a complete system solution for the fast and reliable development of next generation GSM phones for faster time-to-market.
The system platform includes Comneon's GPRS protocol software and is based on Infineon's highly integrated chip solutions the E-GOLD single-chip baseband controller; SMARTi single chip RF transceiver; the E-power power management integrated circuit; and the CMG20G power amplifier module. The modules can be used for the current GSM standard but they support also packet-oriented data transmission via GPRS, and therefore the transition to the next generation of cell phones.
"With the introduction of the System Platform 2001, Infineon strengthens its commitment to provide complete system solutions based on highly integrated chips," explained Guenter Weinberger, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Infineon's Wireless Group. "In collaboration with our subsidiaries DWD and Comneon, we are facilitating the fast and reliable implementation of GSM and/or GPRS projects by our system customers who can then concentrate more on specific product diversification."
Three versions of the design platform are available to address market requirements: a 900/1800-MHz dual-band transceiver configuration for the European and Asian markets; an equivalent 900/1900 MHz dual-band configuration for the US markets; and a 900/1800/1900-MHz triple-band solution for the global market.
The Bluetooth interface integrated into the system platform is based on Infineon's Bluemoon 1 to allow the implementation of Bluetooth applications with GPRS services on the platform. This means that customers receive a well-developed design base and can develop a system, be it a terminal or module, with their own specific modifications, with a very short time-to-market.
Availability
Infineon's customers can start production of their phones using the System Platform 2001 in the fourth quarter of 2001.
