CommVault Galaxy Enterprise 2000 Backup and Recovery Solution to
Protect 40,000 Exchange Users in 350 Locations Worldwide for
Royal Dutch Shell Group of Companies
CommVault Systems Inc.(R), an industry-leading provider of enterprise data and storage management software solutions, today announced that its next-generation CommVault(R) Galaxy(TM) Enterprise 2000 data and storage management solution has been chosen as the worldwide standard by Shell Services International (SSI) to protect over 150 Microsoft Exchange 5.5 and 2000 messaging systems and more than 1,500 Microsoft Windows 2000 servers across its chemical, aviation, gas and oil, and services divisions. Part of a worldwide infrastructure upgrade to Windows 2000 and Exchange 2000, this project will improve the overall reliability and performance of Shell's computing environment. The Windows 2000 and Exchange systems will be deployed in high-performance Storage Area Network (SAN) architectures as well as traditional LAN environments.
"The Royal Dutch/Shell Group is embarking on a world-wide project to renew its entire desktop infrastructure and provide a uniform platform to allow its businesses to operate globally. Shell Services International (SSI), which is executing this project, selected CommVault's Galaxy storage management solution as our worldwide data protection solution for Windows 2000 and Exchange," said Johan Krebbers, Global Service Management, (SSI). "The product's advanced management capabilities and seamless support of different storage architectures were fundamental factors in our decision."
"As a Windows 2000 certified application, CommVault's Galaxy solution offers customers best-of-class data protection for Microsoft Windows 2000 and application-level integration for Microsoft Exchange 5.5 and 2000 environments," said Peter Conway, Director, Windows.NET Server Marketing at Microsoft. "The rationalization of their world-wide infrastructure on Windows 2000 and Exchange will enable the Royal Dutch/Shell Group to lower their administrative costs, improve scalability and achieve better reliability. Galaxy has earned a reputation for delivering advanced storage management capabilities that make it an important enabling technology for Windows deployment."
"SSI wanted to take advantage of new SAN architectures, as well as LAN environments. Our CommVault Galaxy software enables IT departments to employ innovative data protection solutions that complement pioneering computing strategies," said Bernie Veldhoen, vice president, CommVault Europe, Africa and Middle East. "We are pleased to be working with Shell to provide new and better ways of protecting enterprise data."
Strategic Cooperation Key in Decision
Shell's distributed infrastructure of Windows 2000 Servers and Advanced Servers with Exchange 5.5 and Exchange 2000 systems demanded a flexible computing architecture and data protection strategy. The CommVault Galaxy storage management software, leveraging high-performance servers and storage arrays from Compaq Computer Corporation, will protect terabytes of Windows and Exchange data. SSI worked with Compaq Systems and CommVault to ensure full interoperability between the Compaq StorageWorks family of RAID, fibre channel, and storage subsystems and CommVault's Galaxy Enterprise 2000 software suite.
Galaxy Offers Innovative Data Protection That Enables Business Solutions
CommVault Galaxy Enterprise 2000 is the first fully-integrated enterprise storage management solution built from the ground up on Microsoft's Windows platform and designed specifically for centrally managing large heterogeneous computing environments. By presenting a logical interface for viewing and managing data and storage resource information, the CommVault Galaxy solution eliminates many of the management difficulties that traditional backup and recovery products encounter due to their physical device orientation. Only the Galaxy software lets administrators transparently browse and access backed up data spread across many logical storage resources--making the recovery of vital information easier and faster. This approach is especially important as increasing numbers of today's data-intensive enterprises move from server-centric to data-centric solutions, such as Network Attached Storage (NAS) and Storage Area Networks (SAN).
