NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 21, 2001

Salomon Smith Barney today announced that it has hired John Boord as a Director to Head Investment Banking activities in Mexico, effective immediately.

He will report to Carlos Guimaraes, Head of Latin American Investment Banking.

"Citigroup's dedication to Mexico is as deep as our historical roots in the country. As Mexico enters a time of growing prosperity, we are determined to accompany this growth with a steady flow of new ideas and resources to demonstrate our long-term commitment", said Julio A. de Quesada, Head of Citibank in Mexico.

Mr. Boord rejoins Salomon Smith Barney after a one-year absence, during which he created a Latin American/U.S. Hispanic-targeted Internet portal. He had previously worked at Salomon Smith Barney from 1992 to 1999, the latter part of which he served as Director of the Latin American Equity Capital Markets desk, based in New York. Mr. Boord received his BSE in Finance and Management from the Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania in 1989. He received both his MA in International Relations and MBA in 1992 from Yale University.

In his new endeavor, Mr. Boord will work with Gaston Sosa de la Torre, who will continue to be involved in the firm's investment banking efforts in Mexico.

"We are excited to welcome John at a time when our investment banking activities in Latin America are flourishing. John brings with him tremendous talent and will be a valuable addition to our team", stated Mr. Guimaraes.

"This appointment builds upon our existing exceptional platform in Latin America, and demonstrates our ongoing commitment to provide the best quality of service to our clients in the region", added Alberto Verme, Chairman of Salomon Smith Barney Latin America.

Since its formation, Citigroup's corporate and investment banking business in Latin America has achieved record-level success. In 2000, the firm was named "Bank of the Year" by IFR Latin America, and "Best Emerging Markets Bank" in Latin America by Global Finance.

Salomon Smith Barney is a member of Citigroup's Global Corporate and Investment Bank, which brings together Citibank, the world's most global corporate bank, and Salomon Smith Barney, a leading global investment bank and securities brokerage firm.
