SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 7, 2001
PacketVideo Corp., the global leader in wireless media, today announced that it has been granted a U.S. patent on standards-based MPEG technology -- motion-compensated block-based transform media compression.
This patent describes an efficient implementation of the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) that is a fundamental building block of the MPEG standards, including MPEG-1, MPEG-2, and MPEG-4. This patented technology ensures that PacketVideo's encoder and decoder run efficiently on a wide range of microprocessors.
Founded in 1998, PacketVideo has recruited top tier talent in wireless media and MPEG-4 technology, employing over 100 engineers, one-quarter of which hold advanced doctorate degrees. Although this is the first patent granted to PacketVideo, its distinguished team holds more than 75 patents as individuals in previous positions.
"This patent award provides us with protection for key aspects of our technology and further verifies our commitment to, and excellence in, wireless compression technology," said Dr. James Brailean, president, chief technology officer, and co-founder of PacketVideo. "This will be the first of many patents that further establish PacketVideo as the preeminent wireless media delivery company."
The patent -- number 6,167,092 -- is entitled "Method and Device for Variable Complexity Decoding of Motion-Compensated Block-Based Compressed Digital Video." This patent covers the computing of the block-based motion compensated digital video stream such that the computational complexity is greatly reduced. This allows PacketVideo products to perform faster compressions with less processing power, translating into longer battery life for handheld devices. More frames-per-second are processed as well, which means better image quality.
PacketVideo has a number of patent applications pending in video, multimedia streaming, encoding and decoding technology.
