Integrated Component Brings a Literal World of Audio Entertainment
Into Consumers' Homes by Providing Connectivity
to Streaming Radio Stations and Audio Without a PC
SmartMedia, LLC, today introduced its DDL Player, an Internet-connected stereo component utilizing the company's patent-pending DDL (Dynamic Digital Link) technology to provide connectivity to streaming radio stations and audio from around the world, at CES 2001 in Las Vegas.
SmartMedia's DDL Player is based on the Microsoft Windows CE 3.0, operating system, which includes the Windows Media Technologies, and is powered by AMD's Elan(TM) processor. While the DDL Player comes with Ethernet enabled broadband capabilities, consumers without a broadband connection can access the SmartMedia service via the built-in Conexant 56K dial-up modem.
"We're very excited about unveiling the DDL Player to eager consumers yearning for a high-quality Internet radio appliance that does not require a PC or broadband connection," said Eran Pick, founder and president of SmartMedia Inc. "The DDL Player is a simple-to-use, affordable solution that features best-of-class technology to provide listeners with easy access to thousands of stations from around the world including music, news, live concerts, sports and special events."
SmartMedia's DDL Player also features Creative Labs' sound enhancing technology, fully searchable database of radio stations of all formats, five memory presets providing one touch access to favorite stations, access to program schedules, real-time artist information, and automatic software upgrades to ensure the latest in streaming media technology.
"Windows CE 3.0 provides the complete Internet experience and rich multimedia support required by innovative Internet access devices," said Keith White, director of marketing for the Embedded and Appliance Platforms Group at Microsoft Corp. "SmartMedia's DDL Player takes advantage of this rich functionality, enabling users to easily access their favorite radio stations from around the world."
Added Paul Smith, director of business marketing for AMD, "AMD is pleased that SmartMedia has chosen the Elan SC520 to power its DDL Player. AMD's Elan SC520 is excellent for Internet radio applications because of its high-integration and low-power consumption."
Through SmartMedia's DDL Player, people from varied ethnic backgrounds are able to hear radio programs broadcast from anywhere in the world -- hometown programs in local languages. The DDL Player also provides access to real-time weather, sports and entertainment news.
