Advanced Power Technology Appoints New Board Member

BEND, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 8, 2001
Advanced Power Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq:APTI) today announced the appointment of Mr. Alfred J. Stein, age 67, to its Board of Directors, effective December 27, 2000.
Mr. Stein has over 40 years of executive management experience in the semiconductor and high technology industry. He served as Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of VLSI Technology from 1982 until its acquisition by Philips Electronics in 1999. During his tenure, VLSI grew from a venture capital funded start-up to a publicly traded company (Nasdaq:VLSI) with revenues in excess of $600 million and over 2,200 employees in more than 25 locations around the world.

Prior to VLSI, Mr. Stein was Vice President of Motorola's (NYSE:MOT) Integrated Circuits Group, joining the company in 1976. Over a five-year period, he was instrumental in helping Motorola achieve prominence as an integrated circuits supplier. In 1979 he was promoted to Vice President and Assistant General Manager of Motorola's entire semiconductor business. Mr. Stein was with Texas Instruments for 18 years from 1958 through 1976; his last position was Vice President and General Manager for the Electronics Devices Division.
Mr. Stein has also served on the Board of Directors of Applied Materials (Nasdaq:AMAT) and Radio Shack Corporation (NYSE:RSH), as well as several small private companies. He is the past Chairman of the Board for the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA), where he served as a member for over 10 years. He has also served on the Board of Trustees for St. Mary's University of Texas.
Mr. Stein received a Bachelor of Science degree in physics from St. Mary's University in 1955 and a Master of Science degree in mathematics from Southern Methodist University in 1964.
