"The Proud Family" and "Stanley" Pump Up the Volume as Network's
Successful Music Strategy Continues to Unfold
Two of today's hottest pop sensations, Solange (Beyonce Knowles' sister) & Destiny's Child and Baha Men, have agreed to record theme songs for Disney Channel's two upcoming animated series, announced Gary Marsh, executive vice president, original programming, Disney Channel.
Said Marsh: "Great music, performed by uniquely talented artists, and integrally linked to our award-winning original programming, is a key component of our programming strategy. Nothing better exemplifies the direction our network is headed with music than bringing Solange with Destiny's Child and Baha Men into our family to record original theme songs for 'The Proud Family' and 'Stanley.'"
First, Music World Music/Columbia's new artist Solange joins Destiny's Child to sing the theme song to Disney Channel's first all-new original animated series for kids and tweens, "The Proud Family." Solange makes her recording debut alongside Grammy Award-winning Destiny's Child (Beyonce Knowles, Kelly Rowland, Michelle Williams), whose list of multi-platinum hits include "Survivor," "Say My Name," and "Independent Woman Part I." Solange is currently working on a solo album, which is due in January 2002 on Music World Music.
In addition, Beyonce Knowles also worked behind-the-microphone, co-producing the theme song with composer Kurt Farquhar. The song was written by Kurt Farquhar and Gerald Harbour.
Next up are the Baha Men, who will lend their vocal talents to the theme song of the network's newest original preschool animated series, "Stanley," which will be a part of Playhouse Disney, Disney Channel's programming block for preschoolers, their caregivers and parents. The Baha Men took the music world by storm with their breakout hit song "Who Let the Dogs Out." The "Stanley" theme song was written by Peter Lurye.
"The Proud Family" and "Stanley" will both premiere in September 2001.
"The Proud Family" is an animated sitcom that follows the adventures of Penny Proud, a 14-year-old African American girl who's doing her best to navigate through those difficult early years of teen-dom. Fueled by a never-ending passion for growing up, Penny's every encounter inevitably spirals into bigger than life situations filled with hi-jinks, hilarity and heart. Penny's quest to balance her home, school and social lives are further complicated by friends like the sassy Dijonay, Penny's nemesis Lacienega Boulevardez, her loving, if not over-protective, parents, and her hip-to-the-groove-granny, Sugar Mama.
In "Stanley," an imaginative 6-year-old boy embarks on journeys of discovery, as his passion for learning about all animals, big and small, turns into remarkable animal kingdom adventures. Along for the ride is Stanley's best friend, his talking goldfish named Dennis, who helps Stanley quench his insatiable curiosity and understand his newfound knowledge.
Disney Channel, combining original series, movies and specials with timeless classics, is the first general entertainment television network designed for kids and families. Currently available in 72 million homes, Disney Channel is a division of ABC Cable Networks Group, a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company.
