Wisconsin's Office of the State Treasurer, Unclaimed Property Division, and MissingMoney.com announced today that State Treasurer Jack Voight will return approximately $1,500 in unclaimed money to one lucky resident of Appleton at the Wisconsin State Fair at 11 a.m. on August 2nd.
Working with representatives from MissingMoney.com, Treasurer Voight will also help the public search, identify and file claims for any lost financial assets contained on MissingMoney.com, a national database that assists individuals and businesses in recovering unclaimed property at no charge to owners. Fair attendees can visit the State Treasurer's booth no.89 in the South Exhibit Hall.
"Our state Treasury now holds over $120 million in abandoned property, which is an increase over the $100 million we held at this time last year, said Jack C. Voight, State Treasurer. "The State Fair is a perfect setting to give the public quick and easy access for finding their lost financial assets not just in Wisconsin, but across the nation by searching the MissingMoney.com database."
The State Treasury of Wisconsin has accumulated approximately $11 million in abandoned property to date in 2001. Since Voight was elected State Treasurer, the office has returned over $20 million in abandoned property. The states' national unclaimed property database (www.MissingMoney.com) provides people the opportunity to search for their unclaimed assets in a national database containing more than 7 million names.
"We look forward to joining with State Treasurer Voight to help the public search for their lost assets through MissingMoney.com," said Jeremy Katz, Vice President, MissingMoney.com. "It is our goal to help Wisconsin and other states enhance their owner reunification efforts by providing a national search capability."
MissingMoney.com allows potential owners to locate unclaimed property by searching a database of over 7 million names worth an estimated $2 billion free of charge. As a result of the more than 15,000 searches that are being conducted daily on MissingMoney.com, an estimated $162 million has been claimed by more than 650,000 owners. NAPPCO, a compliance expert in identifying and remitting abandoned property to the states, acquired MissingMoney.com in February 2001 as an e-government service and a strategic addition to NAPPCO's core services.
