SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 25, 2001
Heald College's Board of Trustees today announced that the Honorable Fran A. Streets has been elected as chairman of the board. Streets brings to Heald a successful career in the business and financial industry and a vast amount of experience with nonprofit and community organizations.
"At Heald, we have diligently created an atmosphere that fosters success through technological and business education, community involvement and hard work," said Aaron Brown, vice chair of the Board of Trustees. "Fran Streets has worked hard to build a successful business career and donate an extensive amount of time to the local community through her nonprofit work. Skilled in both the financial and technology industries and deeply committed to the community, she is the embodiment of Heald's core mission: serving the local community by providing a nonprofit educational institution for today's fast-paced technologically advanced workplace," said Brown.
Streets will work closely with the board on developing an academic affairs committee to implement a system of checks and balances, which will support and continuously improve Heald's teaching processes. In addition to the best practice governance, one of Streets' personal goals is fundraising. Ultimately, she would like to increase the amount of needs-based scholarships that Heald is able to award.
"Helping students develop a thorough knowledge base and strong skill-set so they can successfully compete in today's competitive market is our main goal," said Streets. "The Heald vision, so powerfully articulated by college president, Dr. Larry Barton, is to transform students' lives through education. By creating an atmosphere that challenges our students to make life changes, Heald has indeed transformed thousands of lives in its 138-year history, and had a profound impact on the communities we serve," said Streets.
Streets currently serves as the appointed commissioner of the City of San Francisco's Library Commission where she is also vice president and chair of the finance committee. Previously, Streets served as president of the International Women's Forum (IWF) where she was able to guide the organization through a global expansion, extend its technological base and telecommunications platform and broaden new markets for women leaders internationally.
After a 32-year career in the financial services industry, Streets retired from Wells Fargo Bank as vice president, city director of the private banking division in 1993. Prior to Wells Fargo, she was senior vice president at the Bank of San Francisco, and served on the loan committee as well as the nominating and compensation committee at the Pacific Bank of San Francisco, Hong Kong and the Cayman Islands.
Accomplishing many firsts, Streets was the first person of color to become a branch manager at Bank of California, first African-American female in Bank of California's management training program and first non-attorney to chair the Women's Campaign fund. Appointed by Northern California Chief Judge Thelton Henderson, Streets oversaw the selection of magistrates for the U.S. District Court.
