SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 4, 2001

Customers Can Now Add JeodeRuntime Environment To Their

iPAQs in a Simple Online Transaction

JavaOne Developer's Conference -- Insignia Solutions (Nasdaq:INSG) announced today the immediate availability of Java(TM) technology for Compaq Computer's (NYSE:CPQ) iPAQ Pocket PC handheld devices. iPAQ customers can now add Insignia's JeodeRuntime environment to their Pocket PCs, initially via a simple, inexpensive online transaction.

Compaq's Windows Pocket PC-based iPAQ devices are extremely popular in the market, with more and more units shipping each month. Compaq is the first Pocket PC provider to offer "Sun Authorized Virtual Machine" technology in its devices -- building on its innovation of last year when it became the first company to offer an MSN Companion-equipped device (iPAQ Home Internet Appliance IA-1) that incorporated Jeode(TM) technology.

"We're delighted that Compaq has expanded its use of Jeode technology to the extremely popular iPAQ Pocket PC platform," said Richard Noling, president and chief executive officer of Insignia Solutions. "Since the Pocket PC was first introduced, we've had many people inquire about the availability of Jeode technology on these devices. We are now able to fulfill this demand."

"The availability of Java technology for the iPAQ Pocket PC is a win for the industry because it brings a secure, open platform that spans multiple devices," said Richard Green, vice president and general manager, Java Software, Sun Microsystems. "Now consumers can utilize the same applications whether it's on a mobile phone, pager, or any handheld product."

"As the iPAQ PocketPC has grown in popularity, we have seen significant demand for Java functionality from both our corporate customers -- who are deploying distributed enterprise applications such as sales force automation and order entry -- and consumers, who want to play Java technology-based games, run Java applications and view Java applets, such as real-time stock tickers," said Sean Burke, Compaq's vice president and general manager, iPAQ Products and Connected Devices Division. "To meet this demand, we are pleased to be the first company to make Jeode technology available on the Pocket PC platform."

"We reviewed a number of Java Virtual Machines and found that Insignia's Jeode EVM offers best in class performance. In addition, we've already successfully deployed Jeode technology in our iPAQ Home Internet Appliance products and have a great working relationship with Insignia, so the decision to look to Insignia to provide the Java technology functionality for our Pocket PC products was a straightforward one," Burke continued.

This software download provides a complete Java technology runtime environment to run Java technology-based applications and applets. It consists of Insignia's accelerated Jeode Embedded Virtual Machine (EVM(TM)) -- including Insignia's patent-pending Dynamic Adaptive Compilation (DAC(TM)) and garbage collection technologies; the JeodeClass embedded class libraries (including AWT graphical support); full Java Native Interface (JNI) support; and browser plug-in support for Internet Explorer 4.0 and Pocket Internet Explorer. Language support is initially available for English only with support for additional languages in the future. Installation is easy leveraging Microsoft ActiveSync. An Uninstall feature is also provided.

JavaOne Promotion

Insignia and Pointbase will hold a promotion at the JavaOne Developer's Conference this week where Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC customers can come to Insignia booth number 223 to download JeodeRuntime and the Pointbase mobile database for free. This promotion will end after the JavaOne Exhibition concludes on June 7.

Jeode Application Environment

The Jeode application environment is an accelerated implementation of the Sun Microsystems Inc.'s (Nasdaq:SUNW) PersonalJava(TM) and EmbeddedJava(TM) specifications tailored for information appliances. At the core of the Jeode application environment is the first independently developed "Sun Authorized Virtual Machine," the Jeode Embedded Virtual Machine(TM) (EVM(TM)), an accelerated runtime engine that delivers an optimal balance of performance and responsiveness in a smaller memory footprint. Using a proprietary technique called dynamic adaptive compilation (DAC(TM)), the Jeode EVM can execute Java technology-based applications on average six times faster than interpretive VMs in roughly the same amount of memory.

Key attributes include:

-- A full-featured software implementation compatible with Sun's PersonalJava
and EmbeddedJava technology specifications

-- Industry leading accelerated performance and efficient memory utilization

-- Configurability and tunability to meet the diverse needs of information
appliance developers

-- A turn-key software solution already ported and tested on popular
RTOS/microprocessor combinations

-- World class support, training, consulting, customization and development
