LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 19, 2001
This week at Wireless 2001, Nokia (NYSE: NOK) continues to demonstrate its vision of a world in which voice, data and video communications converge with technologies to create an "always connected" Web presence. Nokia, a pioneer in the development of mobile communications and Internet technology, will demonstrate its innovative products in the Nokia booth No. 2822 in Hall C at the Sands Convention Center.
A New Road to 3G Evolution
Nokia's infrastructure focus is the further global expansion of GSM with the recently introduced GSM 800 technology. This enables both TDMA, TDMA/GSM or even CDMA operators to launch GSM services on 800 MHz frequencies, with an opportunity to offer 3G services using EDGE technology, as well as full global roaming between the Americas, Europe and Asia.
With this technology, Nokia brings benefits to operators and mobile users around the world, enabling global GSM/EDGE 800/900/1800 and 1900 MHz coverage and roaming, as well as an evolution path to WCDMA.
A New World: Mobile Internet Technology Evolves
During the show, Nokia will make a number of XHTML-related announcements. XHTML is the language that will be used to create all content regardless of whether it is for the fixed Internet or the mobile phone world. XHTML has already received tremendous industry wide support, and it will be the foundation of next-generation WAP (Wireless Application Protocol). By narrowing the gap between fixed and wireless content, XHTML greatly accelerates the pace at which services can be created, and equally important, improves the usability of wireless services for consumers.
New Internet-enabled TDMA and CDMA Phones
Along with the introduction of four new wireless phones, Nokia will highlight its most popular mobile phone models including the Nokia model 3390 phone, the Nokia 8200 Series and the Nokia model 7190 internet-enabled phone. Come and see what is hot for 2001, including mobile text and picture messaging, games and downloadable ring tones. A live and interactive m-commerce application using a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip with a Nokia 5100 Series phone is also on display. The soon-to-be available solution demonstrates the additional convenience and functionality of a mobile cashless payment.
Applications are the Key to Carrier Revenues
Nokia has launched a suite of "must have" applications that will not only satisfy subscribers, but also boost service revenue and provide a vital means of differentiation for operators. Travel Package, FriendsTalk, Payment Solution and Mobile Entertainment Service are just a few of the many offerings that will be demonstrated. Each application has WAP or SMS interoperability, and is supported by GSM, TDMA or CDMA networks. And, as part of its total mPlatform solution, Nokia provides full integration services to quickly establish the applications on any operator's network.
Nokia also introduces mPosition, a suite of end-to-end positioning methods, middleware and applications for location-based services. mPosition, which includes solutions for Nokia-focused or multi-vendor networks, will initially support Cell ID and Timing Advance positioning methods. The mPosition E-OTD solution, which provides greater accuracy, will allow U.S. operators to meet the FCC's mandate for e911 support services.
Keep Your Company Connected
Nokia will also be demonstrating its corporate network solutions with the Nokia Activ Server and Software Suite, an open platform that provides state of the art mobile connectivity for any company's existing information systems, Intranet and extranet services.
New Channel Relationship for Nokia's Wireless LAN Products
An expanded relationship with TESSCO Technologies will make Nokia's Wireless LAN product line available to a wide customer base of value-added resellers. Nokia Wireless LAN products will be demonstrated in the TESSCO Technologies booth No. 2818.
