The Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy today announced its ENERGY STAR(R) award winners for the year 2001 and named AMD as the recipient of a Certificate of Recognition for Technical Innovation. The ENERGY STAR awards will be presented in a ceremony on March 20 in Washington, D.C.

AMD was specifically recognized for its Low Voltage and Super Low Voltage Flash devices, some of which, when in sleep and standby modes, consume up to 99% less energy than competing products. In addition, AMD's patented Simultaneous Read/Write technology used in Flash products also allows customers to reduce the number of components used in products such as cell phones, personal digital assistants and global positioning systems - thereby reducing energy consumption while at the same time increasing system reliability. AMD also received recognition for other Flash product innovations such as Zero Power Operation and High Performance Burst Memory.

For its microprocessors, AMD was recognized for supporting both the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) specification and the ENERGY STAR Tier 2 computer specification in both the AMD Athlon(TM) and AMD Duron(TM) processor families. This allows PCs using our processors to consume 15 watts or less when in sleep state - a 50 percent reduction from the sleep state power consumption of systems that do not support ACPI (S3). In addition, AMD PowerNow! technology - a combination of hardware and software which automatically reduces the processor's voltage and frequency and allows the processor to run at only the voltage and frequency required by the applications in use - was recognized for it's ability to extend battery run time of notebook computers by as much as 30 percent. When used in embedded applications such as set top boxes, AMD PowerNow! technology can reduce power consumption by up to 74%.

The AMD-760 microprocessor chipset was also recognized for its ability to reduce PC energy consumption through its support of the energy-efficient Double Data Rate memory technology. Manufacturers of DDR memory have reported reduced power consumption of nearly 50% compared to Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory (SDRAM) technology.
