ENERGY STAR(R) Certificate of Recognition awarded for
AMD Athlon(TM), AMD Duron(TM) processors and Memory products
The Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy today announced its ENERGY STAR(R) award winners for the year 2001 and named AMD as the recipient of a Certificate of Recognition for Technical Innovation. The ENERGY STAR awards will be presented in a ceremony on March 20 in Washington, D.C.
"The mission of ENERGY STAR is to transform the market by creating demand for energy-efficient products, homes and buildings," said Craig Hershberg, manager, ENERGY STAR products. "AMD's commitment to pollution prevention through energy efficiency is a great asset to ENERGY STAR."
"In 2000, AMD introduced several energy-efficient solutions, including the AMD PowerNow!(TM) technology and the AMD-760(TM) microprocessor chipset. These and other leading edge technologies are helping the environment by reducing the electricity needed to power the end product, thereby reducing power plant emissions and air pollution-securing a place for AMD as a frontrunner in designing energy efficient enabling technology," Hershberg said.
"The innovative power management and energy conservation features of AMD PC processors, the AMD-760 chipset and AMD Flash memory devices enable our customers to build energy-efficient products," said Dr. Hector Ruiz, AMD president and chief operating officer.
"At AMD we are committed to producing energy-efficient semiconductor devices that deliver uncompromising performance for a broad range of information technology systems and appliances. We are extremely pleased to have received this recognition from ENERGY STAR," said Ruiz.
AMD was specifically recognized for its Low Voltage and Super Low Voltage Flash devices, some of which, when in sleep and standby modes, consume up to 99% less energy than competing products. In addition, AMD's patented Simultaneous Read/Write technology used in Flash products also allows customers to reduce the number of components used in products such as cell phones, personal digital assistants and global positioning systems - thereby reducing energy consumption while at the same time increasing system reliability. AMD also received recognition for other Flash product innovations such as Zero Power Operation and High Performance Burst Memory.
For its microprocessors, AMD was recognized for supporting both the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) specification and the ENERGY STAR Tier 2 computer specification in both the AMD Athlon(TM) and AMD Duron(TM) processor families. This allows PCs using our processors to consume 15 watts or less when in sleep state - a 50 percent reduction from the sleep state power consumption of systems that do not support ACPI (S3). In addition, AMD PowerNow! technology - a combination of hardware and software which automatically reduces the processor's voltage and frequency and allows the processor to run at only the voltage and frequency required by the applications in use - was recognized for it's ability to extend battery run time of notebook computers by as much as 30 percent. When used in embedded applications such as set top boxes, AMD PowerNow! technology can reduce power consumption by up to 74%.
The AMD-760 microprocessor chipset was also recognized for its ability to reduce PC energy consumption through its support of the energy-efficient Double Data Rate memory technology. Manufacturers of DDR memory have reported reduced power consumption of nearly 50% compared to Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory (SDRAM) technology.
About ENERGY STAR
ENERGY STAR was introduced by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 1992 as a voluntary market-based partnership to reduce air pollution through increased energy efficiency. ENERGY STAR now works with more than 7000 partners improve the energy efficiency of products, homes, buildings and businesses. ENERGY STAR offers an easy way to identify the most energy efficient products and now has relationships with more than 1600 manufacturers. Together, ENERGY STAR and its partners offer more than 11,000 products in more than 30 categories that bear the ENERGY STAR Label. ENERGY STAR offers labels to identify the most energy efficient homes, buildings, office equipment, heating and cooling equipment, lighting, major appliances and home electronics.
