ORINDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 23, 2001
Dantz Development Corporation, the number one provider of backup software for the Mac, today announced plans to support Mac OS X with their award-winning Retrospect(R) Backup software. Dantz will release the first backup software for Mac OS X shortly after Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) new operating system becomes available.
Retrospect Clients for Mac OS X will be available April 13, 2001. This new software allows Mac OS 8.x and 9.x computers with Retrospect 4.3 to back up Mac OS X systems across a TCP/IP network.
Retrospect Clients for Mac OS X is a Cocoa application that uses a Mach engine for increased performance and takes full advantage of Mac OS X's powerful capabilities. All Mac OS X-specific data, including owner and group privileges, UNIX file/folder permissions, and symbolic links, are backed up and restored properly.
"We've heard from many enthusiastic customers who are interested in Mac OS X, and every one of them has asked about backup software," said Richard Zulch, Dantz's chief technical officer. "They understand that backup software is an absolute necessity. Our Retrospect Clients software for Mac OS X gives early adopters a reliable option."
"Mac OS X is a powerfully advanced operating system that customers will be using to create some of the most sophisticated work ever," said Clent Richardson, Apple's vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations. "These customers will undoubtedly need reliable backup software, so we're pleased to see Dantz announce support for Mac OS X with Retrospect and provide the Mac community with a way to back up its data."
The Retrospect client for Mac OS X is an add-on to the Retrospect Clients software. Initially, the software will be offered as a public beta, available to anyone as a download from the Dantz website, www.dantz.com. Computers running Mac OS X may be added as clients to new or existing Retrospect Backup installations provided the user has an equivalent number of Retrospect client licenses available. Retrospect Clients are included with Retrospect Workgroup Backup and available separately in packs of 5, 10, 50, and 100.
RETROSPECT PUBLIC BETA SUPPORT
The Retrospect Clients software for Mac OS X will initially be released as unsupported beta software. A Dantz-hosted electronic mailing list will be available for community support and information exchange on the public beta Mac OS X client for Retrospect. Users will have an opportunity to sign up for this list when they download the software.
FUTURE RETROSPECT PLANS
Dantz is working closely with Apple to deliver a Mac OS X update to the Retrospect Backup application later this year.
