Telcordia Number Pooling Services to Enhance BellSouth's
Operations Environment
Communications software and solutions provider Telcordia Technologies, Inc. today announced that it has been awarded an Operations Support System Number Pooling contract by BellSouth to meet the FCC national standards addressing numbering resource optimization. The initial phase of the solution was implemented in January 2001.

As part of its agreement with BellSouth, Telcordia will provide a wide range of services, including the capability to support the donation and receipt of blocks of one thousand telephone numbers from the Pooling Administrator. BellSouth will perform telephone number administration using Telcordia(TM) Customer Number Manager, an application that manages number requests for virtually all communications services. Telcordia(TM) Telephone Number Tracker and Forecaster, using data that is collected from Customer Number Manager, will produce the numerous utilization and forecasting reports and supporting worksheets that have been mandated by the FCC.
The FCC chose thousands-block number pooling as a solution for number resource optimization. In the past, carriers were assigned telephone numbers in blocks of 10,000 on a rate center basis, which stranded large quantities of numbers and caused a shortage of central office codes and area codes. As a result, new area codes have been implemented that would ultimately lead to a premature exhaust of the North American Numbering Plan (NANP). Number pooling provides more efficient number resource management and extends the life of area codes by allocating resources in blocks of 1,000 instead of 10,000 to a carrier.
