JACKSONVILLE, FL--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 6, 2001
Trailer Bridge, Inc. (NASDAQ National Market: TRBR) today announced that it has finalized a three-year agreement with General Motors Corporation (NYSE: GM) to remain the exclusive carrier thru December 2004 for GM new vehicles moving from the U.S. mainland to Puerto Rico. Trailer Bridge has been GM's exclusive carrier to and from Puerto Rico since 1998, providing service out of Jacksonville, Florida and Port Newark, New Jersey.
Approximately one-half of GM's annual Puerto Rico volume will continue to utilize Trailer Bridge's innovative and patent-pending Vehicle Transport Modules(TM) (VTM(R)). The VTM's are specially designed, multi-modal automotive transport units developed in conjunction with Trailer Bridge's new patent-pending Triplestack Box Carrier(R) vessels and loading system. Beyond their application in the port-to-port movement, the VTM's offer new potential for improvements over traditional automotive transportation. Trailer Bridge is exploring a number of additional applications for these units, which offer an improved method to move automobiles both safely and damage-free.
Ralph Heim, Trailer Bridge's President and Chief Operating Officer, said, "We are especially pleased with the way our business relationship with General Motors has grown. I believe the Company is perceived as roll-up-your-sleeve innovators who can deliver on a large scale. We believe that this agreement further exemplifies GM's belief in our abilities, our business model and our long-term prospects of becoming the leading carrier of products between Puerto Rico and the U.S. mainland."
Trailer Bridge provides integrated trucking and marine freight service to and from all points in the lower 48 states and Puerto Rico, bringing efficiency, environmental and safety benefits to domestic cargo in that traffic lane. This total transportation system utilizes its own trucks, drivers, trailers, containers, U.S. flag vessels and marine facilities in Jacksonville, FL, New York and San Juan. Trailer Bridge's founder and majority stockholder is Malcom P. McLean, the transportation pioneer who invented containerization forty years ago.
