SAN DIEGO--(BW HealthWire)--May 1, 2001

Drug discovery and biotechnology chemists, biologists, and computational scientists can give their careers a booster shot this summer by enrolling in one or more of the education programs designed exclusively for them by the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Extension.

The series of three week-long programs -- Medicinal Chemistry, Computer-Aided Drug Design, and Regulatory Affairs -- was created and will be taught by faculty from UC San Diego, senior staff members of the San Diego Super Computer Center at UCSD, and San Diego area biotech and drug discovery industry professionals. Classes will be conducted at the UCSD Sorrento Mesa Education Center in San Diego and have been scheduled to allow some free daytime hours to enjoy San Diego's famous attractions.

The program opens with the Computer Aided Drug Design series starting Monday, July 30 and concluding Friday, August 3. Medicinal Chemistry runs from Monday, August 6 through Friday, August 10, and the Regulatory Affairs classes are scheduled to begin Monday, August 13 and end Saturday, August 18.

The Regulatory Affairs curriculum is formatted as a two-phase fast-track program that allows students to earn a valuable UCSD Extension specialized certificate by means of a combination of "live" and on-line classes at anytime and from any location in the world.

The summer school's objectives, as described by Derry Connolly, Ph.D., UCSD Extension's director of science and engineering, is to teach the essential skills required by chemists, biologists, and computational scientists to broaden their perspectives in these vital subject areas. "Individuals willing to commit themselves to these highly-focused and intensive format classes will find themselves better prepared to meet the ever shifting challenges that characterize today's biotech and pharmaceutical industries," Connolly said.

Complete details on the program are available on the Web at http://sees.ucsd.edu or by contacting Susie Baranowski at 858/451-7696 or by email at sbaranowski@ucsd.edu.

UCSD Extension is a division of the University of California, San Diego Extended Studies and Public Programs division, providing post-baccalaureate education and skill-building programs for today's working professionals.
