LONDON & SINGAPORE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 17, 2001
Partnership expected to combine interactive television
with multi-platform messaging technology in order to bring
multi-device messaging service to Asia-Pacific
OpenTV (Nasdaq and AEX:OPTV), the world's leading interactive television and media solutions company, today announced a partnership with ITERU, a global multichannel communications company based in Singapore.
The agreement between OpenTV and ITERU is focused on creating a cohesive interactive TV and unified messaging solution that will be marketed to TV network operators using the OpenTV platform across Asia. This unified solution is expected to provide TV network operators the option of launching a service that will allow subscribers to send and receive messages between televisions and multiple other devices such as mobile phones using SMS (Short Message Service) or WAP (Wireless Application Protocol); PCs with Email and ICQ ("I Seek You"); or Fax.
In addition, TV network operators will have an opportunity to enable viewers to interact with a broadcast program by chatting with other viewers or poll response information.
"Asia Pacific is leading the world in penetration of mobile communications; by linking this exploding market with the television, we believe we can offer network operators a true killer application to generate new revenues while attracting and retaining subscribers. We feel that this kind of service will appeal directly to the Asian market, where interest in new technology services is strong," said Jeff Brown, Managing Director, OpenTV Asia Pacific.
Dennis Goh, CEO ITERU, said, "ITERU's integrated communications technology provides the multi-platform interactivity that can connect the communications world to interactive television. I am very glad to be able to partner with OpenTV, which is the global leader in providing interactive television solutions, to bring this technology to the broadcast industry. Our joint solution positions both companies as technology leaders in their respective offerings in the Asia Pacific region."
