DULLES, Va. & PORTLAND, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 2, 2001
America Online, the world's leading interactive service, and RuleSpace, Inc., the leading provider of content recognition technology, today announced that AOL has integrated RuleSpace's Contexion(TM) Services technology into the web content filtering feature of AOL Parental Controls.
RuleSpace's automated, neural network technology affords AOL a flexible and scalable solution that will keep pace with the Internet's rapid growth while maintaining the highest standards for protecting children from inappropriate online content. In addition, AOL will also continue to use member recommendations of web sites to supplement its automated web filtering.
"We're pleased to be integrating RuleSpace's technology into the web filtering we provide through our industry-leading Parental Controls," said Katherine Borsecnik, president of AOL Brand Programming & Product Operations. "We are proud to help offer parents the world's easiest and most flexible integrated tools to help protect their children from inappropriate content, and today's announcement is yet another step in that effort."
A break-through approach to web content recognition, Contexion Services' neural network technology provides the most accurate recognition of web content available by analyzing both the words on a page and the context in which they are used. The service also provides the broadest web coverage possible through the largest, continuously updated database of inappropriate web content available today. In addition, Contexion Services supports eight languages and is capable of recognizing dynamically generated web pages.
"The automated nature of Contexion Services ensures that the web content filtering feature of AOL Parental Controls will be able to keep pace with the explosive growth of new and changing web content," stated Charlie Kawasaki, president and CEO, RuleSpace. "Contexion Services technology is enabling the next generation of content filtering and will help companies like AOL stay at the head of the pack in protecting users against inappropriate content on the Web."
AOL's Parental Controls, available at no additional cost to all AOL members, help parents make sure their children have a fun, enriching, and age-appropriate experience online. Using AOL's seven screen names per account, AOL's Parental Controls allow parents to designate different levels of access for each child in the household: Kids Only (ages 12 and under), Young Teen (ages 13-15), and Mature Teen (ages 16-17). Parents can also customize each child's controls on specific activities like chat, Instant Messaging, Internet access, e-mail, newsgroups and file downloads or limit the amount of time each child spends online.
