Fairchild's Integrated Active Video Filter Provides Cost-Effective Image Reconstruction for Digital Media Applications

Fairchild Semiconductor International (NYSE:FCS) Thursday introduced a new integrated active filter to improve the quality of video images.

The ML6415 provides reconstruction filtering to remove the artifacts introduced by D/A conversion that distort video images. It uses dual analog filters and a summing circuit to provide both S-video and composite outputs. Fairchild's ML6415 offers a low cost monolithic alternative to discrete filtering solutions for digital set-top boxes, DVD players, PCI capture cards and other display applications.

The ML6415 is a high performance 7.1 MHz Y/C fourth-order Butterworth low pass video filter with outputs capable of driving 2Vp-p AC coupled 150 ohm loads (35 pF). The filter contains a summing circuit to generate filtered composite video, an audio trap and group delay compensation circuits to notch-out audio for the addition of the FM audio carrier. The ML6415 includes AC-coupled inputs and a DC restoration circuit for low tilt. The inputs are Y, C (S-video) and include sync tip clamps and anti-clipping circuits. The filtered outputs are AC-coupled Y, C and composite video (CV) with 42 dB stopband attenuation at 27 MHz and better than 1 dB flatness to 4.5 MHz on Y, C and CV. Performance parameters are rated at 0.4% differential gain and 0.4(Degree) differential phase on the Y, C and CV channels, and 0.8% total harmonic distortion on all channels.

The ML6415 is offered in a space saving 8-pin SOIC package.
