MONTEREY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 7, 2001

President Chester D. Haskell of the Monterey Institute of International Studies today announced that Ernest Scalberg, Ph.D. has been appointed dean of the Institute's prestigious Fisher Graduate School of International Business and as the Institute's associate vice president for Academic Affairs for External Programs.

Currently the dean of the Graduate School of Business Administration at Fordham University, Dr. Scalberg is an acknowledged leader in international business education. At Fordham, he established a global professional M.B.A. program, while also championing a transnational M.B.A. for international professionals and managers. He also led the establishment of a Fordham M.B.A. program in Beijing, in cooperation with Peking University and a consortium of 25 other U.S. universities.

Dr. Scalberg's appointment is the result of a lengthy international search. "We are extremely fortunate to have Ernest Scalberg, a proven innovator in the fields of business and international education, assist in the continued growth and development of the Fisher School," stated President Haskell. "Dr. Scalberg will also play a key role in realizing the potential for non-degree and executive programs, part of our Institute strategy, which will integrate our strengths to better serve global practitioners," added President Haskell.

Prior to his position at Fordham University, Dr. Scalberg was associate dean of UCLA's business school, where he established the executive M.B.A. program and refined the part-time M.B.A. program, both of which were ranked in the top five nationally under his leadership. He was also the founding dean of the school of business at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology under a partnership agreement between UCLA and the Hong Kong government. Prior to these positions, he served as the coordinator of general campus planning for the UCLA's Chancellor's Office.

Dr. Scalberg received his Ph.D. from UCLA in higher education management from the Graduate School of Education with a cognate in organizational behavior from the Graduate School of Management. He received his M.A. from the University of Denver in higher education administration and his B.S. from Southern Oregon University in social science, psychology and secondary teacher education. He also sits on several boards, including the advisory board of the United States and China Foundation and the board of trustees of the International University of Geneva.

Dr. Scalberg succeeds Lisbeth Claus, who has served as acting dean since August 2000. Claus will return to the faculty of the Fisher Graduate School of International Business as an associate professor of human resource management.

"Dr. Claus has done a stellar job of moving the Fisher School forward during the always difficult transition period," stated President Haskell. "Her dedication and commitment to the Institute and education are greatly appreciated."
