NEW YORK and WOBURN, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 8, 2001
MLB Advanced Media LP (MLBAM), the interactive media and Internet company of Major League Baseball, which manages the official MLB website and each of the 30 individual Club sites, and FairMarket(sm), Inc. (Nasdaq: FAIM), a leading provider of e-business selling and marketing solutions incorporating dynamic pricing, today announced that FairMarket is providing the infrastructure that powers MLBAM's weekly online auction of authentic memorabilia. The auction site (http://auction.mlb.com), which debuted on April 1st, Opening Day of the 2001 season, marks another key step in MLBAM's aggressive e-business strategy.
The FairMarket solution enables MLB.com to offer baseball fans a fun and exciting way to own a piece of baseball history. The auction component of MLB.com features one-of-a-kind memorabilia from Major League Baseball's 30 Clubs. To date, the site has featured a wide array of authentic items including: a game baseball from the 2001 Yankee Home Opener; a collection of 31 game-used baseballs from every home opener for the 2001 season; and a Home Plate used in the first regular season game at PNC Park. Additional items are added every Monday with the auctions continuing throughout the season.
"This site ensures that fans can purchase authentic memorabilia from their favorite teams and we expect that the popularity will make the auction a cornerstone of MLB.com," said Bob Bowman, Chief Executive Officer of MLBAM. "We chose FairMarket to power this site because of its reputation for developing effective and exciting auction sites that integrate with back-office functionality and create an enjoyable, interactive customer experience."
The auctions are conducted in conjunction with the new Major League Baseball Authentication Program, the first of its kind by any professional sports league. The Authentication Program provides a guarantee that the game used memorabilia and autographs presented are genuine. Every item is authenticated by Arthur Andersen, and includes an official MLB hologram and is marked with a unique serial number and MLB logo.
"Baseball memorabilia is a booming business. Our technology is enabling MLBAM to use the Internet effectively to both control and extend its brand while engaging fans with a compelling interactive experience," said Eileen Rudden, President and Chief Executive Officer of FairMarket. "Everyone at FairMarket is excited to be part of the MLBAM e-business team."
