SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 13, 2001
QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced that KTFreeTel, a leading Korean carrier, has launched data application services based on QUALCOMM's Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless(TM) (BREW(TM)) platform. KTFreeTel subscribers will now be able to use the company's magic n multipack(TM) service on BREW-enabled handsets and will be able to customize their handsets -- over the air -- with the applications they want and need, for business or pleasure. The BREW platform enables wireless application downloads -- anytime, anywhere.
"QUALCOMM is very pleased with this opportunity to enable KTFreeTel to offer its subscribers downloadable, practical and fun applications that enhance the functionality of their handsets," said Peggy Johnson, president of QUALCOMM Internet Services. "This premiere launch of BREW service, less than one year after QUALCOMM introduced the platform, represents a significant achievement in QUALCOMM's mission to assist carriers in realizing the promise and potential of data services worldwide."
"The BREW platform enables KTFreeTel to rapidly introduce new, compelling wireless data applications to our subscribers," said Dr. Won-Pyo Hong, executive vice president and chief business officer for KTFreeTel. "KTFreeTel is pleased that its customers are the first in the world to benefit from this pioneering and exciting achievement in the wireless Internet."
With the BREW-enabled magic n multipack service, KTFreeTel subscribers will be able to access and install their choice of more than 160 applications -- quickly and easily -- in just a matter of clicks to their handset's keypad:
-- Click One -- connect to KTFreeTel magic n multipack service by pressing the "Magic" button in the center of the keypad -- Click Two -- scroll through the pre-loaded applications and select "Mobile Shop" by again pressing the "Magic" button -- Click Three -- select the desired application from "Mobile Shop" to download it, over the air, and install it on the handset in a matter of seconds -- Click Four -- begin using the application
See related October 24, 2001 announcement for more information on KTFreeTel BREW-enabled launch handsets. QUALCOMM's BREW platform is a thin, standardized execution environment that resides in handsets. Native BREW applications are written in C/C . While the BREW platform supports programming in other languages, such as Java and XML, C/C is used as the primary language by significantly more developers worldwide than any other language, according to International Data Corp. QUALCOMM's BREW initiative is the only approach that offers developers, OEMs and carriers a complete, end-to-end solution for wireless applications development, device configuration, application distribution, and billing and payment. The complete BREW solution includes the BREW Software Development Kit(TM) (SDK) for developers, the BREW application platform and porting tools for device manufacturers, and the BREW Distribution System (BDS) that enables developers and their carrier customers to get applications to market and coordinates the billing and payment processes for them. Carriers' BREW-based services will enable consumers to customize their handsets by downloading applications over the air from a carrier's application download server.
