ISC2 Honors Distinguished Academic Corey Schou; 2002 Hal Tipton Award Presented to Top Information Security Professional of the Past Year

(ISC)2, a not-for-profit industry consortium dedicated to training and certifying information systems security professionals and practitioners worldwide, today announced that longtime information security educator Corey D. Schou, Ph.D., is the recipient of the 2002 Hal Tipton Award.

Schou was presented the award, which recognizes top information security professionals, at the (ISC)2 annual meeting held last month in Washington, D.C.

Schou is professor and associate dean for computer information systems programs at Idaho State University, based in Pocatello, Idaho. He is also director of the National Center for Information Systems Security Training and Education, the Center for Decision Support and the Simplot Decision Support Center.

In addition, he is a founder and current chairman of the National Colloquium for Information Systems Security Education.

[pilcrow (paragraph sign)] As a frequent public speaker and active information security researcher, Schou has authored more than 200 papers, books and articles. He was responsible for compiling and editing computer security training materials and standards for the Department of Defense.

The Federal Information Systems Security Educators Association selected him as the 1996 Educator of the Year, and in 1997 he was given the TechLearn award for his life-long contributions to distance education.

The Simplot Decision Support Center at Idaho State University was recognized in 1998 for its outstanding contribution to the information systems security profession by ISSA (the Information Systems Security Association). In addition, Schou's program in Information Assurance was recognized in 2000 as one of the original National Centers for Academic Excellence by the federal government.

He has been selected twice as researcher of the year and has been recognized for his service record by Idaho State University.

With more than 30 years experience in information technology, Schou has designed and developed information and training systems for organizations as diverse as the State Department, Federal Express, Microsoft, Florida Parole Commission, American Bankers Association and General Motors. He works closely with senior management at Apple Computer, Microsoft, United Airlines and other major corporations.

He is widely recognized as an authority on software engineering, team building, collaborative systems, organization re-engineering, and information systems security and privacy.

The award's namesake is a security industry pioneer and (ISC)2 co-founder and Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) training director. Tipton was the inaugural recipient of the award.
