LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 28, 2001
U.S. Patent to Protect NYKO's Worm Light -- the First Lighting
Accessory for Game Boy -- From Infringement by Other
Illumination Devices, Including BULB
NYKO Technologies Inc., the creator of the light category for the gaming industry, announced that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has granted it another utility patent.
This decision marks the fourth patent granted to protect the innovative integrity of NYKO's lighting technology for portable computing and handheld video game devices since its introduction of the Worm Light(TM) for Game Boy Color in September 1999.
NYKO's latest patent protects its intellectual property against manufacturers, distributors and retailers from imitation products that utilize NYKO's lighting technologies. Specifically, the patent provides protection against any game lighting device that utilizes many features currently being offered by competitors, including use of power from the system to illuminate the screen using a BULB or LED, flexible arms, light adjustability, diffusers and magnifiers.
"With this new patent, we will be able to focus on our core business, which is to create high-quality, innovative products," said Herschel Naghi, president, NYKO Technologies. "Without the diversion of litigation, NYKO can fully devote its attention to the creation of breakthrough products, like the Worm Light, to enhance the gaming experience for all consumers. While we realize that a number of retailers have infringing products on their shelves, we hope that both retailers and manufacturers will respect our newest patent."
Naghi also noted that the impetus for securing the patent was to maintain the integrity of the lighting category by preventing lower-quality knock-offs from entering the market. NYKO's technology utilizes LED, which remains the preferred, high-quality method of lighting the Game Boy and other systems.
Based on newer technology, LED uses less power and provides superior lighting. However, since LED is more expensive to manufacture, many other companies use the older technology required for BULBS.
