HEILBRONN, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 10, 2001

Atmel(R) Corporation (Nasdaq:ATML) announced today the availability of a new telephone circuit that provides the industry's highest level of integration compared with previous discrete solutions. The new device U3759B helps to minimize board size and production costs as only very few external components are necessary to manufacture extremely compact and cost-effective corded telephone sets.

The U3759B integrates all analog signal processing functions on one chip. It contains all components necessary for signal amplification and adaptation to the line such as speech circuit, side-tone equivalent and ear-protection rectifiers, tone-ringer interface circuit with voltage hysteresis and a supply current regulator for external devices.

The symmetrical input of the microphone amplifier enables the use of all popular types of microphones (piezo electric, electric and dynamic). Dynamic, as well as piezo-electric, ear pieces can be used due to the receiving amplifier's symmetrical output. The tone ringer has a single-ended output. The side-tone suppression can easily be adjusted for sending or receiving amplification. Furthermore, the device provides an anti-clipping function in transmit direction and automatic gain control for line-loss compensation. A "privacy" function mutes the receive and transmit signal. During off-hook mode, the device's intelligent power supply management supplies the companion dialer or microcontroller chip.

"Our objective is to serve the customers' needs by offering easy-to-handle, universal system solutions to help reduce production costs. With our new phone circuit U3759B, telephone manufacturers will benefit from the advantages of higher integration and will be able to produce extremely cost-effective telephone sets," stated Udo Tillmann, Product Line Manager Atmel Wireless & Microcontrollers Division.

Samples of the U3759B in SSO28 packages and demo boards are available. Pricing for the U3759B starts at US$0.75 (10 k).
