NASHVILLE, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 15, 2001

Ken P. McDonald, President and Chief Executive Officer of AmSurg Corp. (Nasdaq/NM:AMSG), today announced that for the second consecutive year, the Company has been included in the annual listing by Forbes of the "200 Best Small Companies in America". AmSurg substantially improved its ranking for the latest year, placing 79th on the list for 2001 compared with 139th on the list for 2000.

The listing is based on a survey of thousands of publicly held corporations in the United States. To qualify for the listing, each selection had to meet a variety of benchmarks pertaining to size and growth, as well as undergo an extensive financial review. Supporting its statement that the companies on the list, "are the premiere publicly traded up and coming" companies, Forbes wrote that less than 1% of the companies eligible to be on the list won a top-200 ranking. Among the highlights of AmSurg's ranking for 2001, it placed 33rd and 38th for five-year and twelve-month revenue growth, respectively, and 57th for five-year growth in earnings per share.

Mr. McDonald commented, "We are proud to have been included in Forbes' `200 Best Small Companies in America' ranking for the second year in a row and to have risen so far in the ranking. We believe our inclusion in this list reflects both the strength of our business model and the consistency with which it has been implemented over the long term."
