LAKELAND, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 15, 2001

Publix Super Markets Inc. and Maxim Health Systems are again teaming up to offer flu shots for $15 and pneumonia shots for $25 in all Publix stores.

Publix Spokesman Lee Brunson said, "According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), production of flu vaccine has been delayed this year and availability is expected to be limited through October. To make sure that high-risk individuals have the first opportunity to receive the vaccine, from Oct. 20 through Oct. 31 we will offer flu shots to those that meet high-risk conditions. The service will be expanded to all individuals Nov. 1 through Dec. 8."

The CDC defines high-risk individuals as:

-- persons 65 years of age or older

-- residents of nursing homes or other chronic care facilities

-- anyone with chronic disorders of the pulmonary or cardiovascular system,
including asthma

-- any woman who will be in her second or third trimester of pregnancy during
flu season (Women who meet this criterion must have a doctor prescription to
get vaccinated.)

-- anyone who has had regular medical follow-up or hospitalization during the
preceding year because of chronic metabolic diseases (including diabetes),
renal dysfunction, hemoglobinaopathies or immunodeficiency virus

-- children and teenagers who are receiving long-term aspirin therapy and
therefore might be at risk for developing Rye syndrome after influenza season
and have a physician prescription for the vaccine (Anyone younger than 18 must
have a parent or guardian present to sign a consent form. Only children nine
years and older will be able to be vaccinated.)

-- health-care workers and others in close contact with persons at high risk.

Steve Wright, national director of wellness services of Maxim Health Systems, said, "The fact that Publix has so many locations means it will be more convenient for people to protect themselves against the flu. Publix's dedication to serving the local community is evident by their support of this program."

Individuals wishing to obtain information on Publix's immunization program should call 877-629-3580. A representative will answer questions and direct the caller to the nearest Publix location offering the program. Individuals can also look for posters and flyers at their local Publix, which will provide them with a list of area flu clinics.

Publix, named by Fortune as one of the "100 Best Companies to Work For," is the nation's largest employee-owned grocery chain. Maxim Health Systems is the leading provider of flu shots nationwide. People can visit the company's Web site at http://www.maxhealth.com.
