PARIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 23, 2001

Industry's First Integrated Tools Specifically Designed to Support

the Java Card(tm) Platform

The Sun Microsystems exhibit at the Cartes Conference in Paris this week includes a preview demonstration of the CodeWarrior(tm) for Java Card(tm) development tools from Metrowerks.

The development tools, which will begin shipping to Metrowerks customers at the end of October, are the only fully integrated tools specifically designed to create, debug and test Java Card applets. CodeWarrior tools will help accelerate the delivery of Java Card platform applications in key industries such as financial services, telecommunications and government.

Sun Microsystems turned to Metrowerks to create CodeWarrior for Java Card development tools. "The Java Card platform has become a leading open standard for multi-application smart card technology," said Eric Chu, Group Manager, Industry Marketing for Sun Microsystems. "The integration of Sun's Java Card development tools with Metrowerks CodeWarrior provides programmers with an excellent development environment to easily create secure applications and services, which can be deployed across any products compatible with the Java Card technology."

"Metrowerks is committed to providing the Java Card platform development community with a comprehensive Integrated Development Environment for creating Java Card applets, speeding time-to-market for leading-edge products," said Thomas Loupe, Strategic Alliances Manager, Metrowerks.

CodeWarrior for Java Card tools include a hardware simulator that allows developers to fully test their applications without connecting to a hardware reader and card, which shortens the time required for the repetitive edit-compile-debug cycle. The CodeWarrior toolset also allows developers to debug individual Application Protocol Data Unit (APDU) communications packets, providing the ability to pinpoint exactly where problems are occurring. In addition, the CodeWarrior toolset includes an interface for easy, plug-in integration of third-party hardware.
