CVS/pharmacy (NYSE:CVS) today announced that it will donate $50,000 to American Red Cross relief efforts involving Tuesday's terrorist attacks against U.S. targets. Funds for the donation will come from proceeds raised at the annual CVS/pharmacy Downtown 5K, which will take place on Sunday, September 16th in Providence, Rhode Island. The race is an annual event and is one of the largest road races in New England.

Funds for the donation will also come from the CVS Charity Golf Classic, one of the nation's premier charitable sporting events. The 2001 tournament was held this past July and proceeds from the event will be awarded to more than two dozen charities on Tuesday, September 18th.

"This is a difficult time for all of us at CVS and for all Americans," said Tom Ryan, Chairman, President and CEO of CVS/pharmacy. "However, it is important that we focus on helping the survivors and on assisting the heroic emergency service personnel who continue their round-the-clock efforts to help us recover from this disaster. That is why we are pledging these funds to the American Red Cross and assisting recovery efforts in every way possible."

"The American Red Cross is grateful to CVS for its generous support in ensuring that victims of this national disaster will be helped during this crisis," said Barbara DeCesare, Executive Director of the Rhode Island Chapter of the American Red Cross.

In addition to the contribution to the Red Cross:

-- CVS has provided food, water, medicines and other assistance to fire, rescue and law enforcement personnel working at the site of the Pentagon terrorist attack. CVS operates a pharmacy inside of the Pentagon building. All CVS Pentagon pharmacy personnel were successfully evacuated on the morning of the attacks.

-- CVS also operates a pharmacy on Fulton Street in Manhattan, close to the site of the World Trade Center complex. During the entire day on Tuesday, the pharmacy served as an emergency medical staging area to assist victims of the New York attacks.

-- In addition, CVS operates a 375,000 square foot distribution facility in Somerset, Pennsylvania, located in close proximity to Tuesday's crash of a hijacked airliner. The facility provided food and water to emergency service workers who converged on the crash site. Several CVS personnel who work at the facility are also volunteer fire and rescue professionals who immediately assisted at the crash site.
