PADERBORN, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 17, 2001
Webwasher.com AG, a leading global developer and marketer of Internet filtering software backed by German electronics giant Siemens, today announced WebWasher(R) Enterprise Edition (EE) Version 3.2.
WebWasher EE 3.2 is the first enterprise-level filtering tool that seamlessly integrates the latest version of the Internet Content Adaptation Protocol (ICAP) - ICAP 1.0. ICAP is an open protocol that enables communication between edge content devices, such as Web caches and Internet content delivery servers, and application servers. WebWasher EE, the "all in one"-solution for Internet Access Management, Internet Content Filtering, and Internet Security, enables enterprise customers to filter and block all kinds of unwanted Internet content quickly and easily. Network Appliance, Inc. (NASDAQ:NTAP) announced last week the latest release of its industry leading, and fully ICAP 1.0 compatible, content delivery platform NetCache(R) 5.2.
WebWasher EE's support of ICAP 1.0 allows enterprise customers to utilize WebWasher EE's comprehensive filtering functions via the ICAP interface. DynaBLocator(TM), WebWasher EE's URL database that blocks unwanted Internet content, is now deployed on the request side rather than in the response path, which makes URL filtering significantly more efficient. Due to expanded user-based settings, different rules for access control can now be deployed via WebWasher and ICAP.
In addition to the ICAP 1.0 integration, WebWasher EE offers a number of new features for efficient filtering and monitoring:
- Through the enhanced statistics function, users can review data volumes and total requests, including blocked requests, for 5-second up to 24-hour time frames. - The Auto Log File Rotation makes the administration of WebWasher's log files easier by generating files according to user defined criteria. - A new prefix filter - with proven success in the WebWasher client version - increases privacy protection. - In order to simplify user based or user group based settings for Internet access, WebWasher EE integrates with LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) and other standard directory services.
"WebWasher customers are realizing the benefits of caching technology in order to maintain an efficiently responsive network ," said Dr. Horst Joepen, CEO of webwasher.com. "Our strategic partnership with Network Appliance has satisfied this need by offering this integrated `Wash & Cache' solution supporting the ICAP standard. This solution is ideal for large companies currently replacing backbone architecture server farms by Internet caching solutions."
"As the first to offer enterprise-level filtering with ICAP 1.0, WebWasher is instrumental in facilitating the move towards a comprehensive NetApp(R) ICAP appliance," said Lee Duggs, president of the ICAP forum and Manager Business Development at Network Appliance. "One of our customers' key concerns is optimising Internet usage not only by caching, but also through Internet Access Management and Internet Content Filtering. With NetCache 5.2 and WebWasher EE, we now offer a comprehensive solution for a variety of Internet filtering."
NetCache is a registered trademark and Network Appliance is a trademark of Network Appliance, Inc. in the United States and other countries.

About iCAP
The iCAP Forum is hosted by Akamai Technologies and Network Appliance and is joined by leading Internet companies including content-delivery service providers, application developers, and Internet infrastructure companies. Participants in the forum are listed on the iCAP Web site at www.i-cap.org. Instructions on how to participate in development of the protocol are available on the Web site or by contacting partners@i-cap.org.
Central to the iCAP concept is a simple, yet powerful, open protocol that enables communication between edge content devices (i.e. Web caches and Internet content delivery servers) and application servers that modify content and then deliver it to Internet access devices. For example, when a Web cache receives a request from a cell phone browser, the cache will deliver the requested content to an application server that adapts the content for display on the cell phone. The cache serves the page, and caches it for subsequent cell phone browsers. This allows a very high degree of flexibility in the types of services that can be offered at access points while maintaining the high performance and integrity of the access servers. Interested parties can provide feedback by contacting partners@i-cap.org. More information on this initiative is available at www.i-cap.org. The first value-added services solutions are expected to reach the marketplace later this year.
