SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 18, 2001
MP3 Playback Capability Now Available for All CLIE Handhelds
Letting consumers conduct a symphony with their stylus, Sony Electronics today offered consumers MP3 playback capability with all its handheld models. Today's launch of the CLIE(TM) PEG-N760C handheld with a built-in digital audio player, and for non-audio CLIE handhelds, the PEGA-SA500 MP3 module, offer the latest in audio technologies for handheld devices.
Because the new CLIE N760C handheld operates on the industry's latest Palm OS(R) (version 4.1) software, it is an easy-to-use organizer with the added functionality of a digital image/movie viewer and audio player. The new model features an integrated digital audio player (MP3 and ATRAC3 file formats) along with the handheld industry's highest quality LCD screen with 320 x 320 pixel resolution and 16-bit color (more than 65,000 colors) support.
"Sony launched the personal stereo category more than 20 years ago and we learned that people like to take their music with them...it's part of their everyday lives," said Russell Paik, vice president for handheld marketing at Sony Electronics. "In order for the current line of CLIE handhelds to really capture the title of Personal Entertainment Organizer, music has to be available on every model. With this announcement, now it is."
The new CLIE(TM) PEG-N760C handheld will retail for about $500, and the PEGA-SA500 MP3 module for about $130. Both devices will be available at retailers nationwide in October, or can be pre-ordered beginning today at www.sonystyle.com/clie. Detailed product information can be found at www.sony.com/clie.
> PEGA-SA500: The Sound of SonyThe PEGA-SA500 MP3 module enables MP3 audio file playback on all non-audio CLIE models, including the N610C, S320 and S300 handhelds, by connecting to the serial port of these devices.
The module reads MP3 audio files stored on Memory Stick(R) media (sold separately) and also enables stereo sound with gMovie(TM) application video clips by way of a digital signal processor (DSP) integrated into the unit. The CLIE SA500 accessory comes supplied with headphones and an installation CD-ROM with the following applications:
-- CLIE Audio Player application -- PictureGear(TM) 4.4 Lite -- RealJukebox(R) 2 Basic for Sony (Real Networks) -- gMovie version 1.4 (Generic Media)
PEG-N760C: The Standard in Multimedia Palm-Powered(TM) Handhelds
Incorporating Palm OS software version 4.1 and compatibility with Microsoft's new Windows(R) XP operating system, the CLIE N760C handheld features a color palette with more than 65,000 colors available, which translates into more vivid digital images. And because the new device features a reflective TFT LCD screen, those images can be seen both indoors and out.
To enable users access to their personal library of legacy and downloaded copyright-protected audio content, the CLIE N760C handheld plays both native MP3 and encoded-ATRAC3 audio files. The unit reads digital audio files directly from a Memory Stick(R) memory card (8MB card supplied), freeing up the internal 8MB (7MB available) of memory for standard personal information management (PIM) applications, such as address book, memo and calendar. ATRAC3 audio files require the use of Magic Gate Memory Stick media, which are sold separately. The unit comes equipped with an audio remote controller and the popular headband-free w.ear(TM) headphones.
As with the N710C and N610C models, the new handheld's enhanced Jog Dial(TM) navigator allows for easy, one-hand access to applications and information. Located directly below the Jog Dial navigator, there is a Back button that allows for incremental back screen searches.
Expanding Possibilities: Memory Stick Media
Both embedded and optional audio players can download or transfer up to four hours of digital audio content on a single 128MB Memory Stick card. Available in 8MB, 16MB, 32MB, 64MB and 128MB capacities, Memory Stick memory cards allow consumers to share and transfer digital photos, videos, music and other digital files among a myriad of Memory Stick media-enabled devices, such as CLIE handhelds, digital cameras, PCs and digital music players.
