3G Single-Chip Solution Incorporates High-Performance ARM926EJ-S CPU
and Supports Video Decoding/Encoding, 2D/3D Graphics Accelerator, Camera Interface and New Memory Architecture for High Performance and
Low System Cost
QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced details about the MSM6100(TM) Mobile Station Modem (MSM(TM)) solution. The third-generation (3G) CDMA2000 1X MSM6100 chipset and system software features radioOne(TM) Zero Intermediate Frequency (ZIF) architecture and the ARM926EJ-S(TM) core, which incorporates a low-power, high-performance 32-bit reduced instruction set computing (RISC) microprocessor and includes the ARM(R) Jazelle(TM) technology for Java(TM) acceleration.
Compliant with Interim Standard 2000 (IS-2000) Release A, and backward compatible with IS-95A/B Release 0, the MSM6100 solution incorporates the advanced feature set of QUALCOMM's Wireless Internet Launchpad(TM) suite of technologies, integrated Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG-4) video decoding/encoding, MPEG Layer-3 (MP3) audio decoding, a 2D/3D graphics accelerator for advanced gaming applications, a Compact Media Extension (CMX(TM))/Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) synthesizer, a digital camera interface, an enhanced liquid crystal display (LCD) interface, and fast Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) encoding/decoding.
The MSM6100 solution also integrates two low-power, high-performance QDSP4000(TM) Digital Signal Processor (DSP) cores and supports new, more cost-effective memory architectures. The QDSP4000 DSP eliminates the need for the multimedia companion processor(s) normally required for video-based applications, playing MP3 music files and MIDI synthesizer/CMX functions.
"The MSM6100 chipset and system software solution continues QUALCOMM's leadership in driving the worldwide rollout of 3G solutions, enabling cdma2000 1X operators to offer consumers new multimedia, games and other products and services," said Don Schrock, president of QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies (QCT). "By delivering on our continued commitment to provide the most sophisticated wireless architectures, QCT is enabling rapid growth for next-generation CDMA wireless services."
The MSM6100 chipset and system software supports QUALCOMM's gpsOne(TM) position location technology, including a standalone mode in which the handset can act as a GPS receiver, as well as the VectorOne(TM) compass interface. The gpsOne solution, featuring SnapTrack(TM) technology, offers robust data availability under the most challenging conditions, whether in concrete-and-steel high-rises, convention centers, shopping malls or urban canyons. Using a hybrid approach that utilizes signals from both the GPS satellite constellation and from CDMA cell sites, the gpsOne solution enhances location services availability, accelerates the location determination process and provides better accuracy for callers, during emergency situations or while using GPS-enabled commercial applications.
The recently announced BREWapi, an Application Programming Interface (API) for the Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless(TM) (BREW(TM)) platform that is available at no cost, will be included in the system software of the MSM6100 solution. The BREWapi will allow developers and handset manufacturers to create products that take advantage of the MSM6100 solution's advanced technology coupled with the BREWapi's open platform and flexibility.
The MSM6100 solution, along with the radioOne ZIF architecture, eliminates the need for IF components -- including IF integrated circuits (ICs), IF Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) filters and IF voltage controlled oscillators (VCOs) -- thereby reducing printed circuit board (PCB) area and Bill of Material (BOM) for future wireless handsets and other devices, which will enable more cost-effective multimode, multiband phones. The MSM6100 chipset is comprised of the RFL6000(TM) low-noise amplifier (LNA), the RFR6000(TM) RF-to-receive-baseband converter and the RFT6100(TM) transmit-baseband-to-RF converter, all of which are fabricated with a silicon germanium (SiGe) BiCMOS process, thus permitting high linearity and low power consumption.
Sample shipments of the MSM6100 chipset and system software are expected to begin in the third quarter of calendar 2002.
