Inktomi Corp. (Nasdaq:INKT), developer of scalable network infrastructure software, today introduced Inktomi(R) Traffic Edge(TM) Security Edition software to help enterprises protect their networks from internal and external security threats. The enhanced version of Inktomi's leading high-performance proxy cache provides a scalable foundation for network security solutions, including Web-based virus screening, content filtering, user authentication and access control. Inktomi also announced a new partnership with Symantec and has extended its relationship with Websense to integrate its proxy cache with leading third-party security applications. The new Traffic Edge Security Edition provides enterprises with a flexible new option for deploying Web-based security applications, enabling more efficient, secure and scalable enterprise networking at both the gateway and remote locations.
"In today's business environment, enterprises need to provide fast network access to their employees from multiple locations while maintaining tight network security and access control over sensitive information," said Stephen Russell, general manager, content networking solutions at Inktomi. "Traffic Edge Security Edition provides a scalable platform for network security and the flexibility to meet the evolving security needs of today and tomorrow."
"Today's blended threats include virus attacks that can propagate via HTTP and FTP traffic. Now, even innocent Web surfing can be a vector for virus infection, straining productivity and affecting mission critical services," said Gary Warren, senior vice president, Symantec. "The combination of Symantec antivirus software with Inktomi Traffic Edge proxy provides scalable, high-performance virus scanning and repair at vulnerable network gateways, allowing employees to more securely access Web content."

Web-based Virus Protection
In a survey of more than 500 enterprises, the FBI found that over 85% were infected with a virus last year(1). Web-based viruses can take an enormous toll on a network and result in substantial lost productivity. The "NIMDA" virus cost organizations millions of dollars and was spread a number of ways, including simple access to an infected Web site. Traffic Edge software seamlessly integrates with Symantec's CarrierScan(TM) Server antivirus software to provide a first line of defense against Web-based viruses, worms and Trojan horses in all major file types by scanning Web content and downloads to prevent them from entering the network. Once the content is scanned, it is stored in the cache for future use, optimizing network performance and scalability by eliminating the need to scan subsequent requests for the same content.
Content Filtering
Increasingly, enterprises are seeking to manage employee Web access to maximize productivity, while neutralizing the distractions and possible risks that accompany Internet privileges. In fact, last year alone companies lost more than $63 billion in lost employee productivity due to non-work-related Web surfing(2). To tackle these issues, Inktomi Traffic Edge software integrates with Websense Enterprise v4.4 employee Internet management (EIM) software, the industry's leading EIM solution. The integration of Traffic Edge with Websense content filtering software enables enterprises to transparently monitor, filter and report on employees' use of the Internet in the workplace, increasing productivity and reducing the legal liability associated with inappropriate Web content. Traffic Edge software accelerates and manages content delivery across an organization in adherence to an organization's Internet access policy.
Authentication and Access Control
Enterprises need a secure way to enable and manage employee access to the network from a variety of locations, including the office, home and from the road. Moreover, corporations require a new layer of protection that ensures intranet applications such as 401K and HR benefits tools and business productivity applications are not compromised. Inktomi Traffic Edge provides network-based tracking and user authentication via ACL, LDAP, NTLM and RADIUS to Web resources and applications, allowing network administrators to manage which groups of employees can use the Internet and prevent unauthorized access to internal Web applications. By maintaining corporate authentication policies, Traffic Edge software ensures that requested content is only delivered to authorized users.
