BALTIMORE--(BW HealthWire)--April 24, 2002
A&G Pharmaceutical, Inc. is pleased to announce that it has signed a Collaboration and License Agreement with MedImmune, Inc. (NASDAQ:MEDI) to develop and commercialize drugs based on A&G's research with PC cell-derived growth factor (PCDGF).
"PCDGF is over-expressed in a majority of human advanced breast cancers. Inhibition of the action of PCDGF was shown to inhibit the tumor formation of breast cancer cells. It is expected that antibodies to both PCDGF and its receptor will prevent the growth of and kill metastatic breast cancer cells, thereby providing a powerful and specific therapeutic alternative to today's available treatments," stated Dr. Ginette Serrero, inventor of PCDGF technology and co-founder of A&G Pharmaceutical Inc.
"The signing of this agreement with A&G reflects our ongoing commitment to building a world-class oncology business," stated Dr. Peter Kiener, MedImmune's Vice President of Research. "We look forward to working with A&G's management and scientific team to realize the exciting opportunity PCDGF offers for the potential treatment of cancer types."
"To team up with MedImmune is a big endorsement of our technology," stated Le Sun, Ph.D., President of A&G Pharmaceutical.
MedImmune will fund the PCDGF development efforts and will have sole responsibility for the commercialization of products resulting from this development effort. The companies will jointly manage strategic oversight and decision-making on all research and clinical development activities.
A&G is also looking for corporate partner(s) to commercialize the diagnostic kit based on monoclonal anti-PCDGF antibody.
As a part of the agreement, MedImmune made an equity investment in A&G and agreed to fund research activities related to PCDGF in exchange for an exclusive, worldwide license to therapeutic products directed against breast cancer. A&G received an up-front payment and will receive milestone payments and royalties based on global product sales.
