JUNO BEACH, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 12, 2002
Lew Hay, chairman and CEO of FPL Group, Inc., and Moray Dewhurst, chief financial officer, Friday filed sworn statements with the Securities and Exchange Commission attesting to the completeness and accuracy of FPL Group's most recent annual and quarterly financial reports.
Hay and Dewhurst complied with a new SEC directive and the Sarbanes Oxley Act of 2002, both of which are designed to assure the investing public that the company's financial reports are in compliance with federal securities laws.
Earlier in the year, the two executives voluntarily signed the company's financial statement in its annual report, personally certifying the accuracy of the company's financial results.
"The senior officers of every company should be expected to know where its revenues are coming from, how the company earns its income, what risks the company is undertaking in carrying out its business and, when all is said and done, to vouch for the accuracy of its books. Certifying our SEC filings today confirms our ongoing commitment to provide accurate and relevant financial information important to current and prospective investors," said Hay.
The SEC order requires the principal executive and financial officers of 947 companies to each file with the commission a sworn written statement in which the officers must personally attest that the company's most recent periodic reports are materially truthful and complete or explain why such a statement would be incorrect. The order applies to companies with annual revenues in excess of $1.2 billion.
FPL Group, with annual revenues of more than $8 billion, is nationally known as a high quality, efficient, and customer-driven organization focused on energy-related products and services. With a growing presence in 20 states, it is widely recognized as one of the country's premier power companies. Its principal subsidiary, Florida Power & Light Company, serves approximately 4 million customer accounts in Florida. FPL Energy, LLC, an FPL Group energy-generating subsidiary, is a leader in producing electricity from clean and renewable fuels.
