HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 15, 2002
DeXa.Net(a) Selected to Enhance Largest Regional IT Infrastructure
and IP Telephony System for Emerging Global Markets
Schlumberger (NYSE:SLB), a global technology services company, announced today that Dubai Internet City has chosen Schlumberger to implement the expansion of the Dubai Internet City computing network and Internet Protocol (IP) telephony system. Dubai Internet City is a commercial hub for the information and communication technology industries based in Dubai, a city-state in the United Arab Emirates.
Dubai Internet City (DIC), launched in 2000, houses a sophisticated high-technology office complex designed to support the growth of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) companies targeting emerging markets in the region. DIC represents the Middle East's biggest IT infrastructure and has one of the largest commercial IP Telephony systems in the world.
"Dubai Internet City is committed to developing an infrastructure based on next-generation technologies to deliver the highest quality of communication facilities for our customers," said Dr. Omar Bin Sulaiman, chief executive officer of Dubai Internet City. "The experience, high-level competency and efficient project planning of Schlumberger proved critical for the successful implementation of these two projects. We are excited about the benefits this expansion provides to the growing ICT community in Dubai Internet City."
The DeXa.Net expansion implemented by Schlumberger will reinforce and enhance the existing computing and communications infrastructure for all the IT companies operating in DIC's cutting-edge office complex. The Schlumberger DeXa.Net solution applied at Dubai Internet City upgrades the network with high-end equipment and service, adding 1,800 ports for a total of 5,100. DeXa.Net also expands the existing IP Telephony system by 33%, allowing voice, fax, video and data transmissions in any application using a common network interface, improving quality and speed so that information is conveyed more efficiently.
"The enhanced network expansion project will ensure increased speed, reliability and functionality for all the global IT companies operating in Dubai Internet City," said Olivier Muller, vice president, South-Europe, Middle-East & Africa, Schlumberger Network & Infrastructure Solutions. "Schlumberger is delighted to be a part of the infrastructure development and technical support essential to fuel growth in developing global markets."
The Schlumberger DeXa.Net solution is a portfolio of technical consulting and network connectivity services using secure broadband gateways to the Internet enabling enterprises to deploy end-to-end connectivity solutions on a global scale.
IP telephony incorporates next-generation intelligence in converging voice, facsimile, data and Internet communications over a common network, increasing technology efficiencies so that using separate lines for telephones, faxes, televisions and computers becomes redundant and therefore obsolete.
Dubai Internet City hosts a dynamic international business community of over 300 ICT companies with more than 7,000 knowledge workers, representing such multinational IT giants as Microsoft, Oracle, Hewlett Packard, IBM, Dell, Siemens, Canon, Sony Ericsson and Cisco, to name a few. In September 2002, Schlumberger will relocate its Middle Eastern IT regional headquarters to Dubai Internet City.
DIC is the world's only high-tech commercial hub located in a free trade zone, which allows 100% foreign ownership of companies with relaxed laws to benefit business. Dubai's liberal economic policies and regulations allow 100% repatriation of capital and profits, no currency restrictions, easy registration and licensing, stringent cyber regulations and protection of intellectual property.
