Spanish Virtual University Accelerates Productivity, Enhances
Student Acquisition and Satisfaction Following Eight-Week Siebel
eBusiness Applications Deployment
Siebel Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SEBL), the world's leading provider of eBusiness applications software, today announced that The Open University of Catalonia in Spain is experiencing significantly increased productivity, improved student acquisition, and enhanced student service as a result of using Siebel eBusiness Applications, MidMarket Edition -- a family of multichannel sales, customer service, and marketing applications that allow small and medium-size organizations to compete more effectively in today's marketplace. This success follows a rapid, eight-week implementation to unite student information across multiple channels, including the Internet and the telephone.

The expansion of the University's Internet-based education services from the Catalan region of Spain to fee-paying students from other parts of Spain and abroad placed considerable pressure on the University's course admission and course management systems. The University receives up to 40,000 inquiries every year from students via the Internet and telephone, and the disconnected, homegrown systems the University used to manage these inquiries made it difficult to efficiently target and acquire new students and successfully service existing ones.
Using Siebel Sales, MidMarket Edition, the University is now able to maximize course registration volumes and ensure that all students receive a satisfying service throughout the lifetime of their education in the virtual environment. Admissions officers have access to up-to-the-minute data on target students, the courses they are interested in, course pricing, historical activity, and one-click access to quotes. The University also has immediate access to comprehensive pipeline analysis and comparisons against course quotas and previous year's registration numbers.
Once the students have registered, the Siebel solution handles their assessment and day-to-day relationship with the University. For example, it provides the tutor assigned to the student with a complete view of how well a student is performing. Tutors ensure that students have connected to the Web site, check that they attended the virtual classroom and completed the examinations, and verify what grades students have achieved.
Up to 90 percent of the thousands of students who contact the University with course and registration inquiries about the curricula for the forthcoming year do so via email through the Internet. When a student emails the University, the Siebel solution sends an automated response message confirming receipt of the inquiry, and the email is then automatically forwarded to the person with responsibility for the course. That person can then provide either a standard response, using the software's comprehensive templates, or use a more personal reply.
"Siebel Sales, MidMarket Edition enables The Open University of Catalonia to share up-to-the-minute student information throughout the campus; streamline the admissions process; and provide an efficient, high-quality course management service to its students," says Antonio Guerin, General Manager, The Open University of Catalonia. "Using the Siebel solution, the University's administration team is now 40 percent more productive, and we are satisfying the needs of a growing number of students and alumni."
The Open University of Catalonia represents a new concept in university education, offering a revolutionary learning model to a universal knowledge society. Headquartered in Barcelona, Spain, the University offers students a broad range of academic courses, delivered remotely through the Internet. Using this "Virtual Campus" model, more than 25,000 alumni have received a high-quality, dynamic learning experience.
